Tip and flip cab dolly?

I know a ton of those plans were sold, I actually bought a set when they were offered up the first time.

Just curious if anyone actually put one together and used it. Love to see some pictures of it in use. And thoughts on how it was using it would be great too.

Im going to need a cab dolly soon and am trying to decide which way to go.

I didn't build the one you're talking about but I did piece one together out of scrap lying around. It makes working on the cab almost fun. It can be flipped by one person but is very stable in all positions. I'm sure the one made from plans is even better. Mine only flips to the front & rear, the plans one flips to the sides also.

I bought the plans and my son worked at the local Tech school. The students got to build it. They never seen any thing like it. Here it is in use. I think it works great.

I bought the plans and made the tip & flip. Did it as a favor to the guy who did my body work. He loved it and it saved me more than it cost in shop hours. Then he bought it from me when he was done with my pickup.

Don’t have any pics of it in action (tipped).

Re: Tip and flip cab dolly?

Anyone know who made the setup in post #3? The way "jgr" responded to the post, makes it sound like he found those pics online? Looks like a simple setup and more what I'm looking for so I can rotate the cab and paint the bottom. Probably could figure out dimensions and what not, but if someone on here made it, would love to hear pros and cons.

Thanks

I do not know who made the set-up in Post #3.

A big (huge) factor is the purpose and need of this.

If it is locked in this position for paint that is a good.
A custom plan for your project at hand.

Or
For example: If you leave the Windshield in place ?

I have thought of making one of these Plans.

Things to take in consideration is :

Are you replacing the Whole floor pan?

Then there needs to be dedicated spots for pins to lock it in position.

With this balance becomes an issue.
That is no problem if the jig has adjust/-/ability.

Let me know if I can help you get your project going.:chevy::chevy::chevy:

I was going to modify it a bit and install some kind of locking hardware so it can stay in the same position. I have already replaced my floor. I just need something quick and simple so I can clean up some of the welds and paint underneath the cab. I dont know how I feel about manually lifting it and turning it on its back and setting it back down on the cart I have.

Do you have material to work with already on hand?

Is something like this in the picture below what you had in mind?

I dont have any material. That looks like quite the contraption - i cant tell from the pic what that is?
Before it got cold around here I was trying to come up with some ideas. What i was thinking about was almost exactly like post #3 in terms of the tubing being bolted to the cab in that fashion. Instead of the red tubing arms in post #3, I was thinking of using engine stands and make adapter plates with an offset since the stands aren't very tall in hopes that the cab will rotate 90* then slide a pin in the stand. After seeing the setup in post #3, that just looks way easier to make than my engine stand idea.
Im open to other ideas as well, I just want something that I have full exposure to the bottom of the cab and that I can move around so I can get it into my paint booth.

2 engine stands will work.

Attachment 2440122

They just need tubing added for the height of the roll of the cab.

Then fabricate some door brackets like the ones in the link below.

Don't forget that you will need to be able pound on the cab at some point. I made a stand out of old shelving legs but without wheels. I replaced both inner and outer rockers. I would use a 1/4" drill bit to remove the spot welds and then I used a thin long cold chisel to split the two sheet metal layers. Sometimes there was still some of the spot weld holding, which is where the thin chisel comes in. But anyway the point is I needed to put a fair amount of gronk on some of those welds to get them to separate. The choice to not use wheels really worked out well. I also made the stand high enough that I could sit on my shop rolling stool and work comfortably. You can just see the stand in these two pics. When I was done working on the cab I cut the welds on the stand and put the pieces back into my scrap steel pile.

I like it. I'll try and find another used engine stand for sale and then just figure out the offset needed for the adapter plate to fit into the stand and we should be in business. Gotta wait for some warmer weather too.

Looks like a pretty nice setup you have. My cab is sitting on a rolling wooden cart, so I am doing the all that metal work on that before I put it on a rotisserie to paint underneath.
