Nv4500 swap
I have acquired a tranny. It is a gm 4500. What do I need to buy so the speedo works? On the trans its electronic, on the 80 its cable. Also, is there anything else I should be concerned about before hand on the swap?
Thanks |
Re: Nv4500 swap
There are a few different NV4500s such as early (~93-95) and late (96 and up), as well as 2x4 and 4x4 versions. You probably need a bellhousing and to start thinking on hydraulic vs mechanical clutch release.
You might get the Advance Adapters conversion guide for more info. |
Re: Nv4500 swap
Price a Gear Vendors Overdrive... then make an honest list of the parts to install an NV4500 and pad it by another 40% for the stuff you didn't know about.
Having done one I'll tell you right now... the next overdrive manual I'm doing will be a stock granny 4 speed with a Gear Vendors unit. Time and $ ahead to go that direction. If your truck is 4x4 you don't have to worry about the speedometer. It's driven off the output of the transfer case... That was my solution on the 76. You'll have to get creative with a 2wd unit. Dodge used cable speedo on the first couple years but GM did not. There's the Dakota Digital VSS to cable adapter. The Abbot Cable X is similar. |

Re: Nv4500 swap
This should solve your Speedometer issues fairly easily.
https://www.speedhut.com/ecommerce/p...peed-Converter I have something similar on a Jeep CJ, and it works great. Most NV4500s I see use a weird differential mounted sensor (it would be difficult, if at all possible to put this on a square) I'd take the GPS style over that any day. |
Re: Nv4500 swap
im using Dakota digital conversion boxes on all mine
https://www.summitracing.com/search/...oview=SKU&ar=1 as stated ,its not a cheap swap...but to me its worth it...your biggest issues will be clutch linkages...also what engine are you gonna use? finding all the engine to trans parts can be tricky, if your having to look for factory stuff..and very expensive if you use advance adapters stuff |
Re: Nv4500 swap
