Painted over glovebox help
 

So I bought a 70 gmc swb and someone painted over the glovebox and I tried to scrape some off with a knife to no avail. It’s a a/c cab big block and was really wanting to see the build sheet to see what all it came with .
If anyone has an idea how to remove the paint and not remove the print please let me know thanks in advance !

If it still has the plastic cover over it, wet sand it with some 1000 grit.

I had a square body with the SPID on the inner fender under the hood. Someone spray bombed the engine compartment black. On a below zero (F) day last winter I took some room temperature gorilla tape and put it over a test section on the bottom and sure enough the paint peeled right off the plastic covering clean as a whistle. I continued with the entire SPID and 80% of the paint came right off. Weird idea for sure but it did work......

great idea Steve, never thought of that. That would work especially well on any SPID with a plastic cover on it.

I would try that or perhaps a very tightly wrapped soft/thin towel around your fingertip that has been dipped in paint thinner - then blotted almost dry - then try to carefully rub the paint off.

Whatever you try, recommend start in the lower left corner of the SPID first. That is where the least info usually is, so if you goon it up, you haven't lost any info. SPIDs are usually arranged so that there are roughly the same number of entries on left and right sides - but the lower right corner is where an order no was placed if there was one, so that's why I'd start on the left.

Also, you can look under your seat to see if there is a build sheet stuffed between springs and burlap - it will have all the SPID info as well (might provide a little piece of mind before you take a sandblaster to the glovebox door :))

I guess I’m not sure what is being referred to as the plastic cover over the glove box . It’s just the spid paper with black paint over it , and unfortunate and distastefully it has a 90’s bench seat in it .

Plastic cover is like a laminate that was put over as a protectant

Didn't the factory plastic cover start in 72??? Thought I read that here....?

The least aggressive way to start, to me, would be to get the wet/dry sand paper, maybe 300 grit...start out at the same corner to be safe. The paint thinner may work also, I'd be super careful doing such...

Maybe you can get the lettering revealed and have the guy on here make you a new decal!!! Maybe add some options you might add to your pickup, if desired...

Let everyone know how it goes, I'm sure many have similar glove boxes...

Mine is a 71 and has a plastic cover.

70 would be a paper spid. 71 started with the plastic overlay.

I knew you'd know!!!

With his being just paper, it will be an extra fragile situation getting the paint off to read the spid...
