80' transfer case

My 80' locked up in 4wd a number of years ago and after I got sick of driving
it that way it was parked in the barn. Now its time to fix it or let it go.
I remember before it broke having one hell of a time shifting out of 4wd.
I believe that the fork pin may have been sheared off.

Can the problem be confirmed or diagnosed further visually, without
removing it from the truck ???

80 is the year where every 4x4 got the Np205. Could have been swapped out in 39 years though.

Re: 80' transfer case

it should be a 205. if it is, the shifting mech is on the pass side front, should be able to get some prybars in there possibly to try to loosen or move it. might need to be soaked with some pb first though.

Re: 80' transfer case

it could...but youll find it much easier, and a lot lighter , to separate them..together theyd be bumping 300lbs and very awkward weight balance

Re: 80' transfer case

if it is the 205 for sure then i have played with a lot of them and built a lot .

grab some good light oil and lube the shift rails were they go in the case . grease the shifter bolt if it has a fitting . make sure the locking hubs are unlocked as this can sometimes bind them up .

these 205 cases like lube and shift a bit funky or bind up when dry in the above said points .

dont forget 4low in or out the trans needs to be in neutral and truck stopped .
