Cassette radio options?
 

I'm looking to replace my non functional stock radio in my 1972 GMC C20 with an am/fm cassette playing radio. How hard is it to fit one from a square body into these trucks? I know that I'll have to probably cut the dash, which is a demon I'm willing to deal with. I'm going for a vintage late 70's / early 80's look with this truck, so the radio has to be the same. Are there any other models out there that'll work?

look on eBay, there are still new in the box aftermarket cassette decks for sale that will fit without cutting.

I've been running AM/FM/Cassettes in the dash all these years, except in my current truck. I've run Kenwood, Alpine, Pioneer, you name it. I have used the unit from an '80s GM truck but can't recall if opening had to be modified. I have had to file the post holes and/or the opening for some a bit. But nothing drastic, and the post holes get covered by the OEM knobs if ever going back to factory.

When I got my truck it had an aftermarket replacement from the 80's that didn't require cutting the dash (although it was cut really weird. Will have to get pics of it) I got a factory am radio that I want to send off so it works as am/fm/and Bluetooth (and maybe xm) but until that's done I might throw that old aftermarket back in there. It worked pretty good for what it was. Never could get tapes to work in it though. And sadly my 80's Mitsubishi speakers were left in my work truck after it was wrecked and I don't want to think about the mold that's growing in them. Anyway I think its an old audiovox or something like that. Definitely not quality but it was the 80's

Here's a picture of a Pioneer KE-2100 unit I bought in 1981 for a 1980 Caprice. One of the adjustable shaft positions is the same as our truck radios, and the face plate would just cover the dash cutout. The radio is about 5/8" greater front to back than the AM radios. It appears it would not require any dash cutting. Perhaps you can use the model number to search eBay. As I recall it worked quite well.

So I was wrong. I had a late 80's kec in my truck. Then I got a Panasonic supreme series from the 70's out of my uncle's 72 dart with the separate realistic 40 watt 5 band eq.

I got a brand new never used Mitsubishi in the box on Ebay for $35 delivered. Has preouts and a cassette. I can still buy cassettes from ebay and have an old JVC tape deck recorder I can make tapes with. I know retro but thats what this is all about right? I also bought an AM which I am sending out to get the full treatment with bluetooth etc. If it works out right I will pull the 58 radio out and do it too. That thing has a lot of room for real big speakers in the trunk.

Don't cut the dash! If you have a nice dash leave it that way.
I use radios from a company called custom auto sounds .
Great company and great products, they sell them everywhere. They fit the dash without cutting it.
