1968 Rear Drum Backing Plate Damage

Hello all,

This is my first post thought I've lurked for a long time. Any help would be appreciated!

I was doing a brake job on my new to me 1968 c1500 as the rear right squealed when braking. After getting in there and replacing the shoes I notice the shoes were not sitting right. The backing plate seems to be damaged at a lower contact point (probably causing the squealing).

My question is does anyone have advise regarding available two piece backing plates or filling damage with weld and grinding smooth?

I ask because I really don't want to have to pull the axle (frankly because it intimidates me). Any advise or direction will be greatly appreciated. I can post pictures if requested.

Thank you in advance!

Over the years I've welded many backing plates where the groove gets cut from the shoes. Weld up and flatten back down with an air sander

X2 on that advise. I have the same problems with the lip forming. I filed it out at one point. It has lasted for a while, yet now that I have an extra low mileage set they will be going on next brake job.

Depending on how shallow the groove is (or deep for the matter) it can last for a while.
