Wheel stud length with Rambler wheels
This seems to be a common question, but I can’t seem to find an answer. I have converted my 70 c15 12 bolt to 5 lug axles. I plan on using a CPP rear disc brake conversion kit (either standard or big brake kit). I also plan on going with us mag rambler 20” wheels...I can’t seem to find any references to wheel stud length for this application. I would like to put the axles in and seal the rear end up, but want to make sure I have long enough studs. I have installed 1/2x20 - 1.5” studs but not sure they are long enough. Anyone who has used CPP rear brake kits and rambler wheels that may have some input is much appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Wheel stud length with Rambler wheels
I would think that the stock length should be fine as the thickness of the new rotor installed would be the same or a little thinner that the drum that was used before. so the dimensions should not change

Re: Wheel stud length with Rambler wheels
I have 18" Ramblers with the CaptainFab disc brake setup using Astro Van rotors. I still have the stock lug studs, and there's still plenty for the lugnuts to grab onto. If it's an issue, you could always use the longer reach lugnuts.

Re: Wheel stud length with Rambler wheels
The rule of thumb for stud length as per the NHRA is: The stud must extend past the lugnut seat on the wheel not less than the diameter of the stud i.e. a 1/2" stud must be proud of the seat 1/2".
So measure how thick your wheel flange is and add the diameter of the stud. |
Re: Wheel stud length with Rambler wheels
When I did my conversion I had the same concern. The stock lengths work perfect with my rambler wheels.

Re: Wheel stud length with Rambler wheels
And for what it's worth I was able to change studs on my disc brake conversion without having to open up the rear. So if you do find you need something longer you should be able to install them after the fact.

Re: Wheel stud length with Rambler wheels
All - Thanks for the info. I assume when everyone is referring to stock length, they mean 1 1/2 studs?
I haven't bought the brake kit or the wheels yet which is why I am unsure. House projects come first before winter... Can the brackets for the CPP rear calipers be installed without removing the axles? |
Re: Wheel stud length with Rambler wheels
you have to remove the old backing plates, in order to do that the shafts have to come out unless you just cut them off. But i would try to save them as some other member might need them in the future.
