65 Wheel/Tire Size post Axle Swap Guidance
Hi Guys,
After swapping to an 84 suburban axle, I need to get larger wheels to fit over the larger rear drum. My goal is to have them as close as possible while still being able to fit under the body without rubbing. From what I can tell, it is a 4 inch backspace on the rear and 5.5 on the front, does that sound accurate? I had an 11 inch wide 15 on the rear but it stuck out from the body by about 3/4 of an inch. I was thinking a 10 wide 16 or 17 with 4 inch backspacing would fit correctly. Bottom line: I really like the wheels/tires/suspension set up on the beautiful truck below. Any rough ideas of what sizes this guy might be running? Sadly, I cant find any info on who built it. Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUXyJRX8LvI Thanks for your help guys! |

Not understanding why you need "bigger wheels" to fit over the drum. If I'm remembering correctly square body suburbans would have came with a 15" wheel with either 4" backspacing for the 5 lug or 3&5\8" for the 6 lug. I have both available to measure if you want but the 4x4's are still bolted to a truck so they might take me a bit longer lol.
On the truck in video its no wonder you cant tell what wheels they are since the camera never sits still or get a full side shot but they look like they might be the knockoff's of crager soft 8's with a factory 4x4 rear center cap all around or maybe the late 80's early 90's aluminum wheels from a chevy 4x4 blazer\suburban that have been painted black . |

There are tons of different companies making the black steel wheels with the 8 holes in them like cragar, pro comp, black rock, summit racing wheels (made and now sold by vision wheel I think) that look very similar to that black trucks wheels but some have smaller or larger holes depending on brand and sometime diameter. Ill also grab a pic of the stock alloy I mentioned.
the Order I put is Cragar Soft 8 - Vision HD 85 - Pro Comp 97 - Pro Comp 98 - stock GM alloy |

Yo 350,
Thanks a ton. That’s exactly what I’m looking for. It may have just been the negative offset on the old wheels I had, but the drums wouldn’t fit in those 15s. I just grabbed some stock 16 8 bolt wheels from the yard, but I will dig into measurements once I get discs up front. It seems like both the axle swap and discs up front will widen the stance a bit, but I am not sure how much. Thanks again. |
