1971 GMC coming home

Just got this old Gmc bought, been sitting a mile down the road for years and never k ew it was there until a storm took the roof off the building. Driving by to my pasture of goodies and saw the tailgate sticking out and thought I had to take a look. Bought new where I’m from and stayed local it’s whole life. Air conditioned, power steering and power brake pickup that’s real solid. Not sure if it’s accurate but they said it was ordered with a turbo 400 in it but haven’t been able to crawl under it and look, they said it was parked because it lost reverse. Anyway, haven’t had many gmcs and since it’s local I think it’s neat. Going to pick it up here in the next few days once they get everything cleaned out. I’ll share the only pictures I’ve got right now though.

Z84=cheyenee=sierra on gmc, should have a headliner and trim. Neat truck with a nice option package.
Fender badges should say sierra and is there evidence of sierra bed emblems?

Neat find. Is the hood emblem added from a late 50's model Chevy fender emblem?

I have a 71 and the leafs are standard equipment.

I was gonna post this same question after reading through the post. I always thought that the USA built Chevys came with trailing arms/coils and the the GMC's had the leafs. The Canadian built trucks from Oshawa whether Chevy or GMC all had coils from the factory but this truck is a St. Louis build.

Very nice!!!
Can't wait for more pictures!!!

When you get it close to running...since they say they lost reverse..If you drop the trans pan, whether it's a TH350 OR a TH400. THere are 2 different types of filters made for both of those transmissions. One has a cloth type of material that clogs up easily, the other is a screen. I've been told by my engine builder to always use the screen type filter...who knows what the fluid looks like....

I know the 60-66 gmcs came standard with leafs but not familiar enough with these years of gmcs to say. I’ve got a 71 Cheyenne that has leafs and it’s written the same on the glovebox. Also, we’re the 400s available in these from the factory in a half ton small block?

Re: 1971 GMC coming home

I’ve never heard of a small block coming from the factory with a TH400. Maybe someone will correct me

Pretty sure my 72 Cheyenne/30 is a 350/th400 combo. I am thinking it was optional in a 1 ton?

Re: 1971 GMC coming home

Well the main reason I ask is because I’ve got a rebuilt turbo 350 but if it originally came with a 400 I’d have it rebuilt. These were the second owners I bought it from who’ve owned it since the mid 70s and say they’ve never changed it but it could’ve been forgotten in all that time

Re: 1971 GMC coming home

You can see the vacuum modulator on a TH400 looking down from the pass side fender. The vacuum line will be visible connected to the modulator, the modulator is at the pass side front corner of the pan, you can't miss it
If you can't see any of that, it's a TH350...it's modulator is at the back of the pan on the pass side...

I have a 72 Cheyenne Custom Camper 2wd that has it's original th400 in it. It was a factory 350/th400 truck low hump.

You’re right, I looked at my 71 data book and 1 tons came with a 400
