Spun a cab mounting nut

Im looking for ideas on how to fix this. I the cab mounting caged nut break loose when removing the bolt. I was able to get the bolt out by using a hole saw to cut a hole above the nut so I could hold it still.

Now I need to fix it - figure my options are:

- 1) remove the caged nut and replace with a 1/2" nut welded to a piece of 1/4" steel plate.
- 2) leave the nut in place, wedge some steel plate between the crossmember wall and the nut to hold it in place.

Anyone done this before?

Ive used a lock washer regular washer and a nut with great success I also used a couple of zips to screw a cover over the hole saw hole in case I need to get into it again and it keeps dirt out

I would also consider a flanged nut as they give you more surface area to weld too.

Be sure to chase the threads afterwards as the can get galled up from welding.

if you have the hole now to get to the nut bend the tabs back tight and weld them together . the reason the nut spun was rust . clean the nuts threads with a tap and blow out . your good to go from there .

Regarding the factory nut - are they lock nuts or normal nut. I would think a lock nut would be better since the bolts thread in from the bottom. If they are lock nuts then the tap would probably take out the "locking" feature.
