Rear swap
 

Anyone know off the top of there head if the rear in a 93 GMC one ton pick up would work in a longhorn?
Any idea what rear that would be? Pretty sure it isn't a dana. (I ahven't been under the pig in over a year)
I don't know the width of the longhorn rear off the top of my head, and a shock absorber relocating won't be too bad...
One of the trucks at the shop just took an expensive crap and we figure it isn't worth fixing up, so I might be able to get the truck for next to nothing...maybe even get it for absolutly nothing.

Just for sh!ts and giggles...here's the donor truck.

The rear is proably a 14-bolt GM rear....pretty tough rear, especially the full-floating models. No clue on if it would work though....time to break out the tape measure and start measuring! :bowtie:

It will work but you need to move the spring perches out 1 1/2 inches on each side because the 87 and newer have narrower frames

How about expensive U-joints?

Andy, 88' and up use a wider frame which will require different spring mount locations, shock mount locations. I don't think the universal joint should be a show stopper as you can modify any driveshaft pretty cheep. You will probably need to know the gearing as that could be important.

Andy, do we think alike or what? I was just given one of those rear ends. I don't know the gear ratio yet or anything, but some rough measuring in my case looks like the leaf springs are just about right on. Don't know how fast I can get to it, but I'll keep you posted when I get to it. If you get on the project right away, let me know!

The boss man got his hands on a tranny for teh truck fo free, and this truck is a seriouse money maker. (has a start-all jump start system mounted in the back. Jump start the deadest of heavy equipment in a matter of moments)
Oh well...you win some and you lose some.

Andy don't give up yet! You know how free transmissions are? It might be in the same parking spot in short order.

LOL, actually, I know for a fact that this tranny is good, and only has about 45K on it.
We have a contract with Frito Lay to rebuild some of there trucks. The free tranny is out of one of there trucks and the mileage is stamped onto the tranny from when it was last chainged.
Frito Lay only wants a core...as long as it is the same make/model and complete...they even told us that if we want to keep the good stuff and provide complet unservicable units...to go for it.
