Gen V starter wires

First of all, Old Chevy SB guy.
I know that I need 12 volts to starter when cranking, but is the yellow wire suppose to be hot after engine is started and key comes back to pre start?
That wire shows hot all the time regardless where the key is or should I be looking at another wire?

Re: Gen V starter wires

On the stock 67-72 wiring:
Purple is the starter signal wire. This is connected to the start position on the ignition switch.

Yellow is connected to the ignition. The coil gets power from 2 places. A resistor wire connected to ON and START at the ignition switch, and from the starter. The resistor wire gives about 8v. The starter will give the ignition system 12V at start.

Re: Gen V starter wires

I'm working with a Gen V L83 harness and there is only two wires to connect , one being the purple wire and a pink wire to the ecm to tell it to start and run. I thought that wire should be hot on the start for sure, but not when the key comes back to pre-start.

Re: Gen V starter wires

if its still connected to the coil you will get coil voltage reading at the starter but the r terminal will only be hot while it is in start position if there aren't any wires on it . its just meant to supply power to coil while starting
