Amazon brand synthetic motor oil....

.
I had no idea Amazon sold this stuff at a decent price ( 5 quarts around 20 bucks )... Ran across this and ended up watching the entire test. FYI Amazon's Oil performed almost as good as Mobile 1...

Warren Distribution in Omaha packages this and a lot of other aftermarket oils....same as NAPA, Autozone and Carquest branded oils

Meets all current specs at a great price....

Warren Distribution and Warren Oil are the same company....

I put fully synthetic Mobile 1 on my 250 inline and it let me know immediately where all the leaks were.

I think there was a thread around here somewhere discussing synthetic being thinner and leaking more.

That does look like a very good deal for full synthetic though!

Re: Amazon brand synthetic motor oil....

Synthetic oil has a wonderful way of cleaning all the crud out of everything and lots of times that results in seals leaking. Not saying it's not thinner for a similar weight in conventional oil as well.

Warren also makes the WalMart SuperTech oil, which happens to be on sale right now:

Mobil 1 synthetic does not contain ZDDP that is needed for any flat tappet cammed engine, especially a 250 inline....

They do have a "mix Oil" that is intended for any vehicle over 75,000 miles....

The ZDDP content kills cat convertors, so its been dropped by all late model oil companies...

I want there to be many healthy businesses in America with multiple success stories, as well as many options for me to decide my own preference. Therefore I will never consider buying Amazon's branded motor oil. They're doing well enough as it is. I'll buy Fruit of the Loom underwear but not a Fruit of the Loom jacket. There are companies known for making quality jackets I'll buy from. Too much big business in America and not enough small. The big ones do just fine without my help

I recently bought some 5W-30 full synthetic oil from a local chain store called Attwods and it was the same price I believe, 20 bucks for 5 quarts. The brand name is Harvest King and it had the GM Dexos1 Gen2 approved label on it. My brother in law tends to be an oil snob, he saw it in my garage and laughed... says its probably recycled. I can't imagine that it would have the certifications on it if he is correct.

Re: Amazon brand synthetic motor oil....

Who says recycled oil can't be as good as first round? There's your snobbery right there shining through. ALL oils MUST meet the standards they claim to meet, and you can believe they do. Different companies have different ways of getting there and getting there is all that matters, not how.

Excellent point. Like there ever was such a thing as "new oil"

Actually, there is... it's called synthetic oil. It's made from hydrocarbon chains from natural gas. Dino oil is made by refining crude.

Synthetic oil can't contain dino oil, unless it's sold as a blend. For that reason, recycled oil won't ever be sold as full synthetic.

So Cornerstone's buddy is definitely full of crap. Because that Harvest King oil is "Full Synthetic", meaning no way it could be recycled. To those of use who grew up with oil only being from crude* and all there was we think of that as being "oil" and the rest as "synthetic oil" since it isn't the same thing as what "oil" is with many different facts/specs to go along with it. You could say synthetic oil IS "new oil". That's exactly what it is. But there ain't no new crude.

* In fact, we grew up with "crude" being known as "oil". Jed Clampett struck Crude. Oil that is... Black Gold... Texas Tea :)

Not true. Group 3 base stocks (mineral based) have been labeled "synthetic"

Group 4 base stocks are commonly blended with Group 3 to give better lubricity.

I wonder about that. I mean, whatever the processes that created it in the first place, I'm sure are still happening. I'm also quite sure that we are using it up way faster than it is being created, so it wouldn't be a never-ending supply or any where near that, but maybe in a million years the next guys would have some...

The crude we are currently consuming took mother nature maybe half a billion years to produce. It's made up of layers of ancient flora and fauna that were "processed" over time in sedimentary rock to become something we can use today...fossil fuel. It is quite literally made of the fossils of the past!

The process is still underway however we are a mere blip on the geologic timescales involved. The evidence of our consumption will ( very likely ) outlast us in the geologic record here on Earth.

That doesn't explain why hydrocarbons are so abundant on other astronomical bodies. Couldn't those processes have occurred on earth?

Liquid hydrocarbons...yes...like on Titan! Dang strange place that but alas, not a drop of crude oil. Unless the planet or moon has had a long history of carbon based plant and/or animal life, there would be no decomposing plant/animal matter being pressurized into the sediment layers and eventually ( over millennia ) transformed into fossil fuel ( coal, crude, gas ).

Our Earth is the only place anywhere that has this combination of elements producing fossil fuel that we know of currently.

I produce a highly refined natural gas, and have an unlimited supply! I'm looking to find a way to capitalize on this sustainable resource.... I guess I could heat my home with it, but it's pretty inconvenient to carry a lighter around all the time. :pty::gi:

I read this and thought of my house ... Wife said no . She's seen the aftermath of too many meth lab explosions on T.V. " You would cause that "

Re: Amazon brand synthetic motor oil....

On my motorcycle racing forum we have a big off shore oil platform guy that can buy literally anything he wants at any time from all the money he makes. Bought the entire pallet of water at a race one day because some other racer was pissing him off and he didn't want that guy to have any. Proceded to give the water away to everyone else..... Anyways, he was talking about the planets oil reserves and renewal rates. We do not need to worry for a very, very long time about supply.

Walmart has castrol full synthetic 5qt jugs for $18. So why buy the off brand?

Re: Amazon brand synthetic motor oil....

If your gonna put $20/5qt “synthetic” oil in your pride and joy, go for it!

Synthetic oil is designed, not refined!
As an Amsoil dealer, I am sold on their oil, it is 100% synthetic and Amsoil does tests all the time to prove how well their products perform. I’d it cheap? No, but it’s worth every penny!

You get what you pay for!
I had a 2007 Hyundai, with 278,000 miles. Before I sold it, I had my local mechanic scope the cylinders and it was clean as new and still had hash marks visible. I Always used Amsoil XL and changed every 5k, I use it in my LS as well as my 17 5.3 LT.

I changed the oil in my Tachoma regulary using Mobil 1. Darn thing blew a head gasket at 175,000 miles. But hey, I'm sure the botom end still looked great. :)

Re: Amazon brand synthetic motor oil....

I dont know if you guys relize that synthetic motor oil has been around for a very long time it is not somthing new , its a oil that has a deep long history with the the USA , but got a very bad rap early on in its conception ,because of other oil companys trying to cash in on there knock off synthetic brands so to speak .

Basicly Mobil invented synthectic oil during WW2 , because a of are war efforts in Africa our tank engines kept frying and mobil came up with a synthetic oil that basicly saved our tank engines from frying . after the war other oil companys tryed there hand at producing synthectic oils that were produced and sold but had big flaws and basicly created a bad reputation for the use of synthetic oils, but Mobil kept on refining there synthetic platform witch they came up with a formula for Jet aircraft, the oil produced was so good it was considered a life time oil for jet engines .

Back in the 70s I learned this because I was looking for a oil for my vintage Harley davidson motorcycles that would give me better lubrication in the V twin aircooled engines , thats when I discovered using Aircaft oil in those engines would give me longer life .

Look at Neo synthetic lubricants.
