2-Piece Driveshaft Noise - Carrier?
 

My '71 GMC 2500 is starting to make noises on cold mornings. I think it's coming from the driveline carrier bearing. Kind of a "screeeeeee" that kicks in above 10 or 20 mph.
Can this bearing be greased? Or do I need to put a new one on?

**Looking for a nice fleetside longbed for my GMC.

Mine was doing that about 3 years ago. I replaced it and have not had a noise since.

Is it a real pig to replace?

Not really, but it does require (for me anyway) pressing out the center U-joint to get to the bolt that holds the removable yoke in place. The removable yoke sandwiches the bearing onto the shaft.

You can get new bearings at any NAPA (depending on what type you have, either the in-line bearing which is what I have, or the stronger "U" configurated bearing). Don't waste your time having a machine shop do the bearing press. At most let them either pull or press your center U-joint if you want to.

I dont know, maybe I have bad luck.
I tried to but a new center bearing for my c30 longhorn, but nobody has the right one for my truck. NAPA, carquest, chevrolet dealers, all try to give me the same wrong part.
The one they try to give me is round, with a mounting flat on one side.
The one in my truck has a bearing retainer that bolts together, and the bearing itself is a small ball bearing that just sits between the halves. Nobody has this thing, all I get is dumb looks for free. The bearing is not really bad, but is worn, and my driveshaft vibrates a little more all the time.
I have seen many 3/4 tons with the center bearing they try to sell me, but never seen another longhorn close enough to see if they have my type. There are two types, I have seen, but mine is a third. Hmmm.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll pick up the other two U-joints when I get the bearing. I've already replaced the farthest back one.
I just hope mine isn't one of those "wierd" ones.

I replaced mine last summer. I've driven the truck about 9000 miles since, and it's making the same noise. It's a higher pitched whine that comes and goes over about 10mph. I've heard that it's due to the fact I left the dust shields on with the new bearing. I need to replace that and my rear shocks. I think my u joints are going too. I'm getting a bit of vibration.
