Question about rebuilding power steering box
 

Do rebuild kits for power steering boxes only solve leaks, or would the rebuilding also fix problems? My power steering sometimes feels like it sticks in a random spot, and with slightly more steering effort it frees up and works normally. I am wondering if it is a rebuild candidate.

1969 CST/10 with 350 and TH400, power steering, manual drum brakes

From what I have read you can't get replacement wear parts for the boxes. I looked into it a little because I wanted a quicker steering. What I was was just basically reseal kits. But there may be something I missed.

Another bit of advice, most remans are crap! You will find a few people that bought a reman box and it was OK. But most people were not happy with their rebuilds. Lot of horror stories.

There are a couple of vendors that are well regarded. I bought a fast ratio box from RedHead and couldn't be happier with it. Not cheap by any means and I tried a reman first. So I recommend if you replace it just go with the good ones.

I have replaced several steering gears with reman boxes from the local parts store without a problem. They are around $160.00. I you ask for one for a 78-79 it will still have SAE fittings and closer ratio than the earlier boxes.

Yes they can but the kit can't save a worn housing in the sealing ring area.

Your sticking steering sounds like the sealing rings are leaking.

Sealing rings are leaking because seals included in the kit are needing to be replaced, or because of a worn housing in the sealing ring area? What is common? If it is not easy to determine if I'm wasting time with a rebuild kit, then I suppose I need to look into getting another power steering box.

I guess that would address leaking, but leaking is not what I am most concerned about. Wow, those are some seriously blurry pictures.

There are full rebuild kits available on RockAuto. Not sure what they all include, so it may not address your concerns. Hmmm

The pictures show up as I show them above, blurry. I was hoping to go directly to the photo crap website so I could see the pictures properly, but that didn't work either.

TX Firefighter's pictures look blurry on this site, but on my phone they are clear as a bell. I suppose they could be saved to file, then reloaded here.

OK. Well, I do wish for people to upload pictures to the forum instead of uploading them somewhere else and trying post them to view here. And assume the people they are trying to communicate with can see them. Anyway, the subject here is not about leaks as his thread covers, but more about the malfunction.
