how to put ashtray in 1964

I know this is a stupid question, but i got a original ashtray for my 1964 c-10 step side on eBay and cannot for the life of me figure out how it goes in. if i depress the front clip type thing, it will go in the hole but seems to be too high and scrapes when you move it. you wouldn't think that it would be that hard, but I'm stumped. Any ideas would be appreciated.(i can rebuild an engine but cannot figure out how to install an ashtray) thanks

Once you place it up in there it drops down then in.

Does it look correct when it is closed? On my 62 the inner workings scrape like crazy when you open and close it. Is it scrapping against the outer painted surface?

FYI, Dry Graphite lub works great on stuff like this.

Ok thanks, I will try to drop it down after it’s up in there.
Thanks a lot!
