Option no. 1F7610 “Front wheel lock hub” question

My goal is to bring my truck back to factory original and I thought that I would only need the blue knob to do so until I noticed 2 things: 1. My center knob has a screw in the center of it 2. My outer chrome ring is not original, the “FREE” and “LOCK” marks are spaced further apart than the original AND the writing is “flipped”. So, after searching the forum I’ve borrowed a pic to use as reference for my questions, while also including a pic of what is installed on my truck.
My truck: 1972 Chevrolet ˝ ton 4X4 127”WB - SPID says option # 1F7610 “Front wheel lock hub”. In order to get back to stock configuration, do I need only parts 4 & 6, all the parts shown, parts 3, 4, & 6 or parts (fill in the blank) + (fill in the blank – parts not shown in pic)? Ron |

I've never tried to mix & match, but you could get lucky. I'd say you have a better chance on a K/10 than if it was a K/20. The smaller 1/2t design leaves few options for varying the design of the knob and ring. All the knob does is turn #3. I'd have to see a picture of what you have like the one you show of a Spicer hub to have a better idea if it could work.

I think what you have now is a Warn hub. You are going to need all of parts pictured and snap rings not pictured.

Here is a picture borrowed from EBay. You are going to need everything in the picture except the spindle nuts and washers.

BlueK5, are you talking about rings # 1 or # 2 in Pic or something else? I'm trying to figure out in the picture what # 2 does / where it would go as everything else looks self explanatory.

bluek5.........was the picture "borrowed" from Ebay a current listing or just something you downloaded for future reference? If it's a current listing send me the link, I may have to be a bidder, unless you have everything in your parts box and have been waiting for me to need them :lol:

bluek5..........thanks a bunch you've been a lot of help. I've only worked on the hubs once, in like 1977. I just went out to the toolbox and pulled out the "Spindle Nut Wrench", is that the only specialized tool I would need, that you know of?

If you have the snap rings, snap ring pliers and a pick (for the larger ring) make the job easier.

Great, so it looks like I have all the tools. Now all I have to do is wait for the parts to arrive. Although the price was a little high, I had to step back and wonder how easy it was going to be to find everything I needed in one place, would buying piecemeal end up costing me more and how much time would I need to hunt down that many parts. Most of the time I'm patient and wait for the right price or quality, but sometimes you stall and ponder whether you should or shouldn't and then ---> poof, they're sold and then you can't find what you need for months. So I pulled the trigger.

Watched the video, pretty decent & the warns look easy to remove. Our Chevy's have a few more parts than the "F" so the video was only so good in that regard. I looked in the soft copy "1972_Chevrolet_Truck_Chassis_Service_Manual" on pages 113 & 115 (3-15, 3-16) and the diagram leaves a lot to be desired. Does anyone have better instructions / diagram?

Thanks again bluek5, great illustration. It really doesn't look to difficult to do (even for a first timer). Yeah, to bad you're not closer. Hopefully we'll meet up someday at an event!
I took a single picture with the hub knobs I now have: top 2 - Blue anodized, middle - NOS & the bottom 2 came with the Spicer Hubs that I bought from Ebay. The bottom 2 are in great shape, no wear at all, only oxidized. I can't wait to clean them up. I'll post a pic after cleanup. |

Good morning bluek5, hope you're up for a couple more questions today from the hub newbie (or anyone else can join in).
1. In post # 4 (parts circled in yellow) you said "You are going to need everything in the picture except the spindle nuts and washers". So, when are those ever used or maybe the better question is: what application would those be for? 2. Do you know what to torque the Hub lock retainer screws to? 3. There was not any Hub lock screw washers, have you found anything in particular that you recommend? 4. The service manual talks about using Lubriplate for the O-rings, but nothing mentioned about the remaining parts, what is supposed to be used? |

Installed the correct hubs and knobs today! Glad that is done so I can move onto my next project. I thought I'd post a pic of the hub knobs I received on that Ebay order that I cleaned up as well as a comparison to the blue anodized & an OEM NOS one.

Does anyone know if individual Spicer hub parts are available 'a la carte'?
We rebuilt the hubs my '71 Jimmy last week, and I noticed the inside tab [~12 o'clock] on P/N 8 from the diagram in Post 14, ''Retaining Plate'' is worn down on one side. It's the ring with at least 16 holes in it. I meant to shoot a pic so I could post it, but by the time I got back to the truck with the camera, my mechanic buddy had already slapped it back together. FWIW we used RTV, a very thin bead, in lieu of the bigger O-ring. |
