$612.13 quote from Safelite
I decided to call and get quote for the 1965 C10, with the chrome trim $612.13.
Was told the trim is not reused, they use new trim and it won't look the same. I have had a big crack in the windshield since getting the truck in 1995, and wow no wonder I never fixed it. Seems I tried pricing it around 2002, and no glass shops knew how to. I wonder what a windshield replacement cost on a average newer car without glass coverage? |
Re: $612.13 quote from Safelite
How much is the glass $125....you can do it yourself, it's not that hard. Reuse your trim.

If you decide to tackle this yourself, here's a couple videos.

Re: $612.13 quote from Safelite
I think for shopping for glass and installation, the problem is going to or calling a typical auto glass shop. They don't know how and they don't deal with the type of installation we have on our trucks. I went to an old school body shop, one that works on older cars. I had them weld in the inside roof patch panel that I ordered from GMCPauls. They were going to need to remove the windshield anyway and it was foggy around the edges, so they said they have a guy they call to bring glass and install it. I provided the rubber seal (Precision seal from GMCPauls), their guy brought the glass and re-used the stainless steel trim that inserts into the rubber seal. It was $150 for the glass and installation. They did not squirt in the butyl sealant, which should be done after windshield installation, but I plan to do that myself since now I know about it. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=793377

Re: $612.13 quote from Safelite
I feel your pain. I used to have a 66 Cadillac Superior Hearse. Windshield was cracked when I bought it. There was a single vendor out of Chicago IIRC that had glass. $2500 USD. :thud: I'm Canadian - that's like sixty thousand duck bucks!! (not really, but really) :canada:
Guess what - when I sold it, the windshield was still cracked  |
Re: $612.13 quote from Safelite
You will want to use your original molding. You can get a new seal from Precision.

Re: $612.13 quote from Safelite
I'll check out the video, but I don't want to buy a windshield, plus expensive shipping, break it trying to install myself.
Maybe after watching the video it won't be so bad. |
Re: $612.13 quote from Safelite
You don't want to buy a new windshield to replace the cracked one?
If you find a hot rod shop that specializes in restorations or hot rods... they should be able to install a windshield and retain the windshield trim. Gary |

Mike,
I got the same quote from Safelite here in the Vista. Contact Tkorinek in mesa here on the board. He got me a new windshield for 125 on my 72. I think they went up a little. I have his info if you cannot find it. Smitty |

Just need to call some other places, if they are all over $600.00, I'll try doing myself. |

I'll see if I can find him, thanks for the heads up. |
Re: $612.13 quote from Safelite
They 100% do not need new trim. Old windshield out. Remove trim from gasket. Take new gasket, put on windshield. Put trim in place. Tape gasket with trim to glass. Install windshield.
I would definitely do a 64-66. I only had it done on mine because we get a crazy cash deal with the glass guy that comes to my school. They charged me 150. CDN. |
Re: $612.13 quote from Safelite
You know they have a jingle. Safelite repair safelite replace. Well I say it like this. Safelite repair Safelite rip off. I went to get the small widow done on the back door. I am talking about the one that is behind the one that opens. It was my moms Rav 4. Safelite wanted $350. I went to a local glass shop and had it done for $135. Shop around Mike, and like was mentioned maybe find a resto shop.

Re: $612.13 quote from Safelite
I called safelite when I needed my glass front and rear done. They said they don't do vintage vehicles. After calling many places, I finally called a local vintage vehicle reseller, he pointed me in the right direction...I think I paid $300 for both front and rear installed...I bought the rubber...no trim. I thought $300 was expensive, but I had to have it done.
To answer your actual question...I had my front windshield replaced recently on our BMW (I had glass insurance). They sent the receipt to me and it showed $900+..I laughed at how ridiculous that was! That did include the glass. |
Re: $612.13 quote from Safelite
A couple of years ago I bought the glass for mine from a local glass shop. they even delivered it and it just over $100. I installed it myself with new rubber and reused the trim. One word of advise, had a helper or two and take your time. It is not really that difficult

Re: $612.13 quote from Safelite
Funny this should show up today. I just dropped my Burban off at the glass shop for the third go around at getting the windshield to stop leaking. Safelight bought out the Mom and Pop glass shop that did the original installation. They are honoring the warranty from the original installation but it has taken some discussion. The original installer didn't use any sealant but told me to come back in 4 months (it was spring) after the new rubber had a sat in the summer sun and shrank up. Then he would put the sealant in. Unfortunately for me the business changed hands and employees before I returned.
The fact you got a quote is surprising. I would bet they are will to do it off the books for a lot of cash. The work to my windshield today is hand written on the receipt. As they said they couldn't enter it into the computer system. They told me that after this time no more work as Safelight policy doesn't allow work on older vehicles. |

Re: $612.13 quote from Safelite
I found a windshield for my 63 on craigslist
Had to drive a little but worth it. |
Re: $612.13 quote from Safelite
You break them taking them out not putting them in.
It is not rocket science, like others said, take your time and get a helper, it is easy, even for the novice. Watch a few youtubes and grow a set and try it. You will feel really good about yourself when you complete this and it will propel you to take on new challenges. I just painted my first truck two years ago and I'm 61, spent the last 40 years saying I cant do it, but I did and it looks professional and I didnt open my wallet to others labor charges. Steve |
Re: $612.13 quote from Safelite
Thanks guys, lots of good information here.
My insurance lady said if I register the truck as a classic, I can get American Family Insurance's version of Grundy or Hagerty, now this was a couple of years ago she told me this, but that's why I was thinking of getting a new windshield. Anyways, on the classic policy, or whatever it is called she said I can drive the truck whenever I want, and I can get full glass coverage, the catch was she would have to make sure there were no broken or cracked windows or windshields. I'll ask her again soon, it's almost time for my other cars insurance policy to re up for 6 months. |

Re: $612.13 quote from Safelite
Just had my new windshield installed , local glass company , 1 hr away. Half there work is on hot rods and classics . Highly recommended by local car groups.
They drove here in a spring snow storm . Had a new precision gaskets , PWG tinted glass . 1/2 hr later .they were done . $400 , money well spent , because they said if there are any problems . They own them. So from my point of view money well spent. Some times the long dollar is cheaper ! |
Sorry , I gotta hi jack for a moment. I am too currently trying to find a windshield and rear glass for a 63 C10. I’m in middle TN , if someone knows of somewhere or someone... the freight charge is insane
