Unusual Axle shaft?

2 Attachment(s)
Hey guys, I need some help on this!
Took my 62 C10 in for new gears (3.38). Good news, found out it's a factory posi bad news needed a new axle shaft. Got a shaft and when I took it in we noticed that the end by the c-clip is thicker on mine than the replacement I found. Looked at another shaft and same thing the end is thinner. Any ideas?
The original shaft is on the top. Thanks

Re: Unusual Axle shaft?

So what rear is in the truck? Eaton or 12 bolt?

Re: Unusual Axle shaft?

If total length of the shaft is the same (seats tightly against the center retaining pin when installed) I don't think it should matter.

It was a bit shorter. The shop was concerned about travel.

Yeah, that doesn't sound right.

Re: Unusual Axle shaft?

Is the replacement axle from a Eaton HO32/33 or from a '63/'64 12 bolt?

Re: Unusual Axle shaft?

It was supposed to be from a 60-62 Eaton. I got it from Aspen in AZ.
I'll call my local yard. They came up with the same type. I'll push for specific details.

Re: Unusual Axle shaft?

Where did you find a new gear for the Eaton? I did not know that anyone was making gears for them. Post a picture of what is in the truck. You just never know with these trucks what may have been changed. The thickness of the spud after the C clip is very important that it is the correct thickness. That is what seats the C clip into the spider gear when the cross pin is installed. To thick and the pin will not go in, to thin and the C clip can come out. Your old axle looks like a 17 spline 12 bolt not an Eaton. That may be why the replacement does not look correct it may be for an Eaton.

Thanks Jimmy, I'll try and find a 12 bolt shaft and see what it looks like.
Those were in the 64-66 trucks?

I’ll try and get a picture. The shop found the gears for me. 3.38 are the only ones available. I’ll ask where they got them. There is also a guy that goes by mothertruckeraz who has gears for older trucks.

Re: Unusual Axle shaft?

That is the Eaton HO32/33 which would be original to the truck.

What is a bit shorter? Measure to the 1/32" about .030 of an inch or you are not going to get an answer that counts. You cant play horseshoes here. You just may need a thicker C clip

Re: Unusual Axle shaft?

If you can’t find a axle I have a couple of those rear ends
