4x4 GMC Suburban
 

Just brought home this cream puff this afternoon. Early 60s Gmc that was put on its top at one point in its life about 30 years ago according to the owner. Has the plaid valve covers and a really nice and straight grille in it. Couldn’t see it go to waste anymore. Actually went to look at a few others the guy had and he forgot about this one setting back by some old farm equipment. The other stuff he was asking an arm and a leg for but I made him an offer for this thing and home she came. Motors free still, either part it out or sell it whole, although the suburban body makes for good storage. Figured I’d share it on here. I’m thinking it’s a 63 but not 100% sure

I like it a lot. Cool old pickup. I was going to ask, since the vin decoding I’ve done say it’sa 115” wheelbase, what’s the difference in this frame and a pickup frame? I’m sure The rear cab mounts from a pickup would need added but is there much difference between this and a shortened pickup frame?

The main differences between a Suburban frame and a pickup frame will be the different radiator support mounts, the extra/different body mounts for the Suburban, and the rear of the frame which has provisions for the rear bumper. Otherwise basically the same.

So if I found a nice cab and bed it wouldn’t be too difficult to change it over then?

Mainly just changing out the Suburban body mounts for the rear cab mount and bed mounts. What to do with the rear of the frame depends on what you want for a rear bumper.

Putting a 2wd suburban body on it would be the easiest... or trade it for a pickup frame if you have a body. Someone would love to have the frame for a suburban

The chances of finding a nice suburban body to put on it are much more slim than to find a Gmc cab and do some adjusting on the mounts and such I would think. Not saying I’ll do it, but it being a factory 4wd makes it intriguing since it would take probably more than its worth by far to fix the body on it now.

I’m not sure how different a 4wd frame from a 2wd is. I installed the cab forward from my 62 c20 on a 62 c10 panel frame to make a short bed truck. Like the captain mentioned, the rear cab mounts from a truck need to be used. The front bed mounts and the next bed mounts from a truck need to be used. On the panel frame, the portion that was different from truck to panel was pieces that were riveted on, so I just removed the rivets and the conversion was done. I agree that original to the frame is better but if it’s to much to salvage???
