Advice on an interior firewall/flooring and assembly needed for a 66
 

I am currently trying to get my brakes redone as I rebuild, but the interior has not been finished out. I was about to bolt up the booster to the firewall and get started installing lines and such and realized that there is additional steering column bracketry going on and I think I need to install first since the booster bolts to the interior bracket through the firewall. So what I am wondering is whether I need to have the firewall interior and under dash done first? From the pics I took during the teardown there is a good bit of jute padding and a cardboard looking fasten on cover as well. My plan was to use the Noico sound deadener I bought years back when I was doing the inside of the doors. I have some left over and thought to order more and finish out just the flooring and in the end carpet the floor.

So far I havent given alot of thought to the jute padding in combination with the Noico sound deadener, maybe the jutes not needed? Just use the sound deadener all up under the dash? I the firewall cover a must you think?

Also if there is any lessons learned you guys have about redoing the interior firewall and what to install first, what not to do that kinda thing I would appreciate it.

Ill attach some pics of the teardown and where it is now. Starting with what it looks like now.

My 65 didn't have any jute up that high. You should be able to bolt up your pedal hanger bracket and pedal now to get your booster/master set up and still get your firewall pad on after without any interference. For 65 at least. You'll need to install the firewall pad before the column and inside heater workings. Wiper motor can go in any time. I didn't do any soundproofing above the firewall pad.

When you get to installing the firewall pad I used well nuts with washers on the inside and s/s button head bolts on the engine side. The aftermarket plastic push ins are crap.

I ordered the rubberized firewall pad from Brothers. It has some jute on the firewall side and fits around everything due to the pre-cuts in it. This firewall pad does not cover the area where the brake pedal bracket and MC bolts thru.

The only thing you have to do is remove the inner steering column cover bolts, pull the cover back a little bit and run the bolts thru the firewall pad. When I installed my pad, I had the steering column and pedals all installed. If you are planning to put sound deadener all the way up the firewall, you may want to do that now...I didn't...I just ran my sound deadener just past the carpet line due to it was a kit that was pre-cut for a 64-66

On that note.....remember to put the steering column cover on the column first before you install the steering column in its proper position. I had to take it all back apart due to that oversight.

I didnt remember that jute being up that high til I looked at my tear down pics. I didnt think it was that important to have all that there so I was going to sound deaden just on the black portion of the firewall and stop it there. I wonder if there is a good reason to run it higher and cover the rest of the under dash?

I am starting to put the bracket and booster back together and tracking down the parts I bagged when I disassembled. I wish I took better pics as I removed the stuff under the dash, I think I may have a few bolts missing for the bracket to firewall. I have this diagram from my assembly manual but its not showing the bolts to firewall.

The 6 rounded post screws I think are the ones that bolt the main bracket to the dash and the firewall. The 3 body panel screws would be for the lower bracket that goes underneath the main bracket. The two smaller screws I think are for a steering column brace to main bracket and that smallest single screw is the one in the diagram I posted. The rectangular part I think goes to the left of the steering bracket to keep the wires from moving forward so much?

the other 2 of those bolts I had I used on the engine side of the firewall to the right of the booster bracket. Only one was in when I took the pic but the other was just above it. The bolts I used on the top of the booster bracket are all I had on it when I found it in storage. Ill have to go get 2 more bolts that mount in the 2 lower holes in the bracket.

I appreciate that Lostmy65, I prepped and painted the booster and master cylinder today with SPI epoxy primer. The lid to the MC is silver and not that goldish looking color and it bugged me to have the booster look different. I bought some duplicolor silver chrome looking paint but I think Ill leave it black and take back the $10 can of paint. Once it dries good Ill start bolting it up and I hope to start bending and cutting lines this week.
