Do I need a fuel regulator?
 

When I put my 350 engine (carb, holly street demon 625cfm) in my truck, I put a Mr. Gasket 12s micro fuel pump. The thing quit after less than 5k miles.

I just replaced it with an edelbrock universal micro pump.

Well, looking at the instructions (which I don't think I did last time) I see they say it needs a regulator. Of course they don't say which one I should get, and if it's for every application..

Anyone use this pump? Could this be why my last failed? I've got it on and it works, but now I'm worried.

I googled it and got some non-specific advice, and some people arguing about what type of regulator you need.

If I need one, can someone recommend one?

A regulator will prevent the float needle valve from being lifted from top much fuel pressure. Some carburetors are more sensitive to flooding from high fuel pressure like Edlebrock 14xx carburetors. Using a fuel regulator will prevent this problem. Like everything for the most part you get what you pay for. I recommend running a mid priced ($80ish) regulator from a name brand.
Pump life span can be lengthen by using a regulator with a return line to the tank. This reduces the load on the pump as it never pumps into a deadhead when the regulator is closed.
