Lowering Spring for Big Block Chevy
Anyone running a big block 454 can tell me how many inch drop in front compared to rear so the truck sits level. I'm figuring most front springs are made for a small block ? If I do 6" rear drop spring and a 1" drop spring in front with a 2-1/2" drop spindle for a total of 3-1/2 " front, 6" rear will it sit level ? Also anyone make a BB header for these trucks ?

Re: Lowering Spring for Big Block Chevy
On my square I have a 6" drop in the back, and 3" spindles up front, with 1-ton coil springs. I just kept trimming 2" off the coil pigtail until it sat the way I wanted it. The 1-ton coils are stiffer (good), whilst most lowering springs are not stiff enough (bad). It does not ride as awful as you'd expect.
If I go static instead of air ride on my '61, I will do the same thing: trim down 1-ton coils to get the height I want to match the back. |

Typical trucks have a 2" rake front to rear so that the truck doesn't squat too much when loaded down. If you're going w/a 6" rear drop & a 2.5" spindle up front, I would opt for a new front BBC rated coil from Moog & trim from there. Typically 1 full coil yields 2" of drop. The 6104 w/a full coil cut should be about what you want. Info previously shared by Rob @ No Limit Engineering & stashed in my 'good to know' folder: Moog # 6082 722 lbs/in 6 cyl, and light v-8 Moog # 6542 842 lbs/in std v-8 Moog # 6102 1015 lbs/in bigblock, longbed c.s. Moog # 6104 1016 lbs/in 3/4 ton, sits 1/2" higher than #6102 Moog # 6454 1060 lbs/in 3/4t bbc, c.s, 1ton |
