Hidden Winch behind stock bumper?
I spent a lot of time researching this before asking the question, but all I have found are old post, most not very relevant or were about the old Hickey sidewinder that is just not an option for me.
I want to keep my stock bumper if possible, most aftermarket are just too big and heavy for my needs/tastes. The stock works for me. I also want to use a more modern winch. Something like the Ramsey, Badlands, Smitty-Built, etc. Something with a remote electrics box. I know I can buy a winch plate to fit any winch I get, but was wanting to see something mounted behind a stock bumper and how it was done. Anyone have anything? |
Re: Hidden Winch behind stock bumper?
You might ask in the 4x4 sub-forum, but the Sidewinder is the only one that I've ever seen.
Your other option might be a front trailer hitch receiver and just have the winch on a "ball mount" insert that could go on either front or rear. |
Re: Hidden Winch behind stock bumper?
might need to join to view pictures, but I know several builds over at the SteelSoldiers.com site have behind/hidden winches. Lots of different designs, and I know some have even used the badlands(Harbor Freight) winches and mounting plates for a near drop in install. most end up flipping the winches upside down, and because they use a cutout in the front bumper, either add bracing or just adjust the fairlead to make sure the rope does not drag on the bumper when pulling.
I would start by measuring between the frame rails and seeing what winch plates could fit. |
Re: Hidden Winch behind stock bumper?
I don't have any pics, but when I bought it, my 73 K5 had a homemade winch plate behind the bumper. A roller fairlead sat just under the bumper. It was set up for a Superwinch, my Warn wouldn't fit under the radiator. I added a 2 inch body lift to accommodate the winch. I took the winch plate off when I installed the snow plow.
Long story, short: Yes, it will fit. It is possible. |
