fuel line question ??

I want to put an in line fuel filter on my 1986 C20 Suburban, and I see that there are two steel lines coming into the bottom of the fuel pump (from the tank)...I think one is a "return"...how to tell which line to put the inline filter on ??

Small 5/16" line from pump is return...Like this..
