Dome light issue
Hello Forum members! New member here.
I recently purchased an 82 Silverado and am in the process of tackling some of the little electrical issues. I replaced my cigarette lighter and in the process shorted and blew the 30 amp horn fuse. Lighter, horn and dome were out but the under dash light was still on. Replaced the fuse and the horn and lighter work but the dome still out. Bulb is good. I’ve think I read every thread on this subject in the forum but did not come across this exact situation. Thank you in advance for your input. |
Re: Dome light issue
Check with a volt meter to see if you have power going to the light socket...it should have 12v all the time...the switches just make the ground circuit to turn the light on

Re: Dome light issue
Do you have a cargo light? If you do, check to see if that light is working. It might be that the wiring back in the cab, if dry rotted. I had to replace mine. It was so dry rotted an brittle, some of the plastic casing around the wires, was just falling off.
Try what mongocanfly suggested first. |
Re: Dome light issue
Well, I checked the socket and had voltage. When I went to put the bulb in again, the socket came off in my hand. Good news, I have power. The bad news, I’m replacing the socket. Probably upgrade to an led like yours TKCR.
Thanks you both for the help. |
Re: Dome light issue
Question about the dome and courtesy light under the dash. Are they both supposed to come on when you open the door? Only my dome light comes on.
With the door shut, if I turn the switch on only the light under the dash comes on. |
Re: Dome light issue
Yes they should come on at the same time.
