Back up lights
 

Thinking ahead again, I got concerned about the NSS. The Ididit column doesn't have the NSS or the back up switch.

I found a Lokar kit that has either the NSS or the back up switch, so I thought I'd use it for the NSS.

That leaves the back up lights, other than a dash mounted manual switch, does anyone have a suggestion for a back up switch that works when the column is put into reverse?

Does your transmission not have a reverse switch on it?

I'm brain dead right now..I'm used to my manual trans having the reverse switch in them...

the retrofit ididit tri five columns do come with a neutral safety switch mounted which requires a solid rod connecting to the trans which should not be a problem. the reverse terminal in that switch will run your backup lights.

I used the stock GM back up light switch that mounts on the side of the 4L60E.
I pinned out the wires that made the reverse connection and ran it back to the rear. I then used 2- 2 way round LED lights and mounted them in the round bed holes on each side of the bed towards the top of the bed sides. When i apply the brakes these 2" LED's turn red. When I back up whey turn White.
I picked up the lights online on a big rig trucking website.

What are you using for a transmission and what shifter?

I'm using a 700R4 transmission. Column shift Ididit column probably with the Lokar rod type shifter - I'll start on that when I set the primed body back on the frame for one final fit.

I am looking at the Lokar kit for the NSS switch, it mounts on the tranny and when the shifter arm is in the park position it engages. It can be used for back up lights, but not both at the same time.

So I found a switch that is for a Yamaha XS650 that works by pulling a cord. It could be used for the NSS and the Lokar for the back up lights.

I hope to put this stuff together in the next month and find out if it will all work.

I know you're asking about AD trucks but I thought i'd chime in and show what I'm doing on my TF TRUCK.

This photo is from a truck I saw at the Brothers show a few years ago. took me awhile but I found motorcycle signal lights that match these on eBay. I like this approach because it will fill the large spaces on each side the license plate which I don't care for.

if you want something about 4" round, chrome, and has a sealed beam light, check out a cruiser motorcycle driving or fog lamp. teardrop style so they kinda fit with the old truck look.

Ok, the problem with back up/NSS was the aftermarket column my buddy bought didn't have the switches on the column. So after some scrambling I figured out the Lokar system and I used it for the NSS with the 2 pronged gizmo to push the switch in when the tranny is in Park or Neutral.

Then the problem was the back up lights, again no switch. I got an extra Lokar switch and built a bracket, and the two look something like this.

The first prong on the Lokar system pushes the NSS in neutral. When you shift to reverse, that same prong pushes on the second switch. Then in neutral the second prong pushes on the NSS, but it misses the back up by just enough to not activate it when you put the tranny in low. I got out the multi meter and made sure. I have continuity for the Lokar system and for my bracket, so everything works!

Now to start looking for back up lights for the future!

You had better patent that bracket. You just came up with the simple solution to an issue that had bugged hundreds if not thousands of guys.

I'm thinking that those switches are standard issue reverse light switches on heavy duty 4 or five speed truck transmissions.

nice work, great ingenuity.
with a little more work you could probably have that entire bracket bolt onto the pan bolts ahead and behind the shifter shaft. like a piece of angle iron with a hole drilled in the right place for the shifter shaft, then trimmed for aesthetics, and another piece or 2 welded on to support the switches or use a piece of tubing to get an arced flange where the switches mount up. you could use studs instead of bolts for the pan where the bracket bolts up and then tubular spacers to get the bracket at the right depth off the pan flange.

Mr48, that spade bracket would work just fine and is basically the same design and size.

Raven, I did think about the one bracket with two switches, and if this ever gives me any trouble, I'll go to the dual switch bracket idea. I think I could weld the piece to the top of the Lokar bracket, bend it if necessary to the right angle and it would be just one bracket.

I thought about sending this to Lokar and ask them why they don't make one.

yeah, that should work too, maybe slot the holes a bit for micro adjustment.
really, you can't be the first guy with this issue but Lokar could easily make the shift lever with a raised section and bumps in the right places for the switches and a bracket with the switches to correspond. I guess, from their perspective, they would say just buy the right column. anyway, good thinking and innovation.

I am looking for the pinouts for the GM neutral safety switch and backup light switch for 4L60E transmission. I have the dual connectors on the neutral safety switch (7 pin and 4 pin). Can anyone help?

I'm not even sure what a "pin out' is, my technology ends about the time they started putting computers on cars. Can you explain that?

There are pins in the electrical connector and I need a diagram that shows what each of the pins is for (e.g. input voltage from ignition switch, output voltage to backup lights, etc.)
