AM-FM Radio Question
 

My original 71 am-fm has a problem,
the string that rotates the am-fm cylinder or drum is loose/has slack.
I can't see where it should be routed. Or attached.
Anyone explain how to do this ?
Is this something I can do myself ?
Searched for old threads but didn't find anything.
I can post pictures if needed.

Have you considered this.
Get an old AM radio (since you can find a lot more of them in “Yard Trucks), and carefully disassemble it, to see if there’s a way to adjust or tighten the part you’re asking about. Or maybe you can use this part to fix yours.
If you find that this task is too difficult or impossible, at least you didn’t destroy your AM/FM unit.
There is someone on the forum that rebuilds these old units, but it is kinda pricey.

The part that he is specifically asking about does not exist in an AM radio.

Found a board member who can replace the string that controls the am/fm dial.

If anyone is interested, I will PM him with your information.

My 69 Pontiac was same way, I took the case off and could see where string attached. Took up the slack in string, (not much) put a drop of super glue on it and the dial still rolls completely over like it should. That was 20+ years ago.

The slide bar for AM/FM attaches to a pivot bracket that is directly behind the slide bar, the string goes from that through a hole on the left side and down to the drum roll which is spring loaded. You could remove the string from the pivot point and do a couple of twists and put it back on to the pivot point and it might take up the slack.Hope this helps!
