Replacing the “Fuel Sock”?
Here’s a thought that just came to mind.
How does one go about replacing the “Fuel Sock” in a stock in cab gas tank? And another question is, where would I get one? Do you just go in through the top front of the tank, where the fuel line comes out? I just saw a FB post, and the guy shows on picture of the remnants of his, with the caption “well it lasted 49 years”. In my 70, I’ve never replaced mine. And to my knowledge it’s still the original. If it’s a good idea to replace it, I’m gonna, so I don’t get stranded somewhere someday. |

Here's one, a google search brings back others. I got one when I had to replace my sending unit.

I got mine from here: https://www.fillingstation.com/
You just need to remove the sending unit/fuel pick up, and its right there on the end of the pick up. Easy to install, just a pain in the butt to get to. Gary |

Rock auto calls it a Fuel Pump Strainer

I replaced the sender with a new one. The sender came with the sock.

While we are talking about gas tanks is the actual sending unit still available for our trucks. I looked on Rock Auto and didn't see one listed.

Re: Replacing the “Fuel Sock”?
I literally just replaced my fuel sock last week. Mine had the original one which basically disintegrated. I had the clean the remnants from inside the tank.

I replaced the sock in 2013 as part of my frame off, no sure where I got it. About four months ago I had the carb rebuilt and the rebuilder told me there was a little debris in the bowls, check your filter. I opened it up, Russell 40 microns, and it was full of fine particles, I cleaned it out and replaced it. I pulled the sending unit to check the tank, the sock was mostly gone, I removed what was left and replaced the sending unit. I opened the filter again last week and its about 1/4 full again. Here's a picture with a coin to judge the particle size.

Re: Replacing the “Fuel Sock”?
Had the same problem with mine a few rears back. The sock had completely disintegrated . After the P.I.T.A. of cleaning out the tank, I installed a in line fuel filter under the cab where the fuel line comes out of the tank, and did not replace the pickup sock. Can't remember exactly, but I think I got this tip from someone on here.

It’s an OEM brand, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it’ll fit with no issues. How does the filter attach to the end of the tube? Is there a clamp, or a tension washer that holds it? I’ll probably find this out in the morning, when I pull my sending unit out. Of course level searched YouTube, but could find anything specific, so I’m guessing it can’t be THAT difficult |

It is just a press fit onto the end of the tube. . |

Cool.

Re: Replacing the “Fuel Sock”?
Switched out the Filter Sock today took about 10 minutes.
Really easy, but mind you, my sending unit outlet is completely exposed as I have bucket seats. The old sock came out in one piece but I could see tears and holes starting to form. I laid it on the bench to take the old one off, and as soon as I touched it, it fell apart. I guess it was time to change it.:smoke: The change out was simple and as some have said it may be a litt loose, but I just had insert the new one a little farther, and it was secure. My advice to all. If you’re still running the stock setup (In cab tank with factory sending unit), and it has never been replaced, DO IT, so the old one doesn’t end up sucked up into your fuel pump and lines I tried to show a picture, but my connection is weak today |
