230 issues.

I’m working on a friends 1965 gmc 1000. I had the stock 230 running but noticed a ticketing noice and a slight knock noice. I puke stud valve cover off to see that no oil is coming squirting out. I checked the oil and it is full. A can hear some lifters ticking. Could it haveva bas oil pump. If the rockets are clogged what would be the best way to unclog them?

Does it have an oil pressure gauge or a light? A light comes on at (I think) about 10 or 15 PSI, and the gauge you can read as being 60 PSI full scale. At idle, the push rods won't necessarily squirt oil on an old engine. Is the top of the head clean around all the valves and rockers? I mean like there wasn't a bunch of caked up "grease"- congealed oil from lack of maintenance. Maybe post some pics. Pics are always good.

I won’t be able to send any pictures for a bit. The truck is a good distance from me. The gmc has a light that read “low oil” wvrytike I turn it on. There was a bit off old oil/hunk on the top of the head when I pulled the cover. There was also smoke coming from inside the engine up through the rockers when it was idling. I’m not sure if that is justbthe engine venting. It will also make a quiet high pitched squeal when it’s idling it sounds like it’s coming from inside the block. All the rockers were moving. A few were a little loose and rattling. I’m not sure the spec for tightening them.

In my humble experience, I loosened the rocker until the rocker knocked, tightened until the noise went away then one turn after that. I actually liked that little 230 when it ran good.

Hopefully you don't go through this,

Sometime later, I got noise again, figured to do the rocker thing again but the noise wouldn't go away. So, I drove it. I had sparks come out of exhaust. 1/2 can of starting fluid and running on 4, I got it home with a plume of smoke behind me! Pulled the head and I melted 2 and 5 pistons, with missing rings. I dropped a crate motor not too long ago after a 350 blew up on me (high mileage 350 out of a van). It runs like a scalded coyot'.
