Alarm Wiring - Light Flash Output
I'm wiring an Avital 3100 alarm and power door lock kit from A1 Electric on my 1979 K5. I have almost everything hooked up (door locks, siren) except the light flash output. I want the parking lights to flash when I arm and disarm the system.
The alarm module has a jumper and can be configured to output either a (+)12V, or a (-)200mA output suitable for driving factory parking light relays. Here's a link to the alarm install manual: https://www.directeddealers.com/manu...12%20print.pdf for reference. Any suggestions on how to connect the "Light Flash Output" to flash my park lights? |
Re: Alarm Wiring - Light Flash Output
"In the (+) position, the on-board relay is enabled and the unit will output (+)12V on the H1/2 WHITE wire."
If I read that correctly the alarm unit has an internal relay to drive the parking lamps when you select the + jumper position. Tie this White wire to the parking lamps power wire. Don't use Scotchloks or butt splices. They mangle vehicle wiring harness. |
Re: Alarm Wiring - Light Flash Output
Thanks Hatzie. Yes it has an onboard relay. Am I able to make that connection under the dash? I'm hoping to avoid another wire out the firewall. I also have a new AAW harness, so like you said want to avoid any splices.
The headlight switch has a parking light and a taillight output. I believe they are connected on the switch. Could I tie in at the switch?: |
Re: Alarm Wiring - Light Flash Output
You can connect to the switch.
The GM wiring diagrams show the layout of the original switch plug so that may help. If this is one of those "universal" wiring harnesses you essentially have a completely custom wiring setup. I'm not sure how much help I can give you. You'll need to hang onto the documentation from AAW. Hopefully they have a decent wiring diagram. |
Re: Alarm Wiring - Light Flash Output
I have the AAW 1973-82 Classic Update Kit so for the most part its nearly identical to my factory harness. Here's the instructions with that kit:
https://www.americanautowire.com/pub...20IN%200.0.pdf On sheet 3, the headlight switch wires are labeled, so I'll tie into the brown "Park Lamp Feed Out" on that harness. Thanks |
Re: Alarm Wiring - Light Flash Output
Hi Hatzie. It worked great. Thanks for your help.
Front and rear lights flash with the alarm by connecting to one of the brown wires at the headlight switch. The switch itself connects both brown wires so connecting to one flashes both the front and rear lights. Re: Alarm Wiring - Light Flash Output
Wow is that the relay making that noise when they flash.
Nice looking truck |
Re: Alarm Wiring - Light Flash Output
Thanks
No, the noise in the background is the door lock actuators. The actuators have a good strong punch to them. I got the door lock and alarm kit from A1 Electric. |
Re: Alarm Wiring - Light Flash Output
I bought Door lock actuators from them for my truck about 15 years ago and they still work great. They are loud as hell though. I wish I had done something with an alarm too.

Re: Alarm Wiring - Light Flash Output
Yeah, the actuators sure pack a punch.
The alarm was much easier to install than I expected. I only hooked up the door locks, siren and light flash output, but adding the ignition kill would have been easy too. I just put a new AAW wiring harness in so wanted to limit modifying it as much as possible. The main reason I installed the alarm was for the key fobs with my power locks. |
