1966 GMC Short Fleetside

So I've had this truck since around 2010 . Figured it was time to put this one back together. Its been off the road since around 1971 and was last registered 1970 .1966 GMC short bed fleetside Custom. Panoramic cab, Power Steering , Power Brakes, Powerglide , Radio , Spotlight , Dana 60 3:54 posi . Original black paint , 22,000 miles. Previous 2cnd owner had taken it partially apart to build a drag truck , well like most dreams he ran out of money and didn't screw it up. Original owner B.A. Brainerd from Peoria IL. supposedly bought this GMC to use on his farm.

Another one from your "time capsule" collection. Outstanding! It literally looks like a super clean original from 1970. Needless to say, not an easy find 5 decades later. Thanks again for sharing these invaluable reference photos for what a '66 GMC Wideside looked like in it's prime.

Hmmm, I guess it's ok. I mean, for an old truck with black paint.
Just kidding, Jon. What a gem! I can't imagine having this one in my back pocket for a decade and just recently pulling it out for reassembly. The extent and quality of your collection is mind boggling. Bravo!

I just can't fathom turning something that original and well optioned into a drag truck.

Re: 1966 GMC Short Fleetside

Well you have to look at things in 1970 perspective to understand it.

Thank you . Something thats been bothering me on this truck now, is the white mirror and arm. Ive seen this on many stock GMCs but Im reading in the GMC Data book that 65-66 was silver. Do you have any photos supporting silver mirrors and arms ? Was missing from the truck when I bought it.

I'd post that question over on the 60-66 forum.

Yes, silver mirrors and arms for '65 to '66 GMC's, probably most '64's. White mirrors and arms for 60-'63 GMC's. One caveat, many Fremont assembly GMC's had arms painted body color like Chevy with black mirrors.

Ugh , just looked in the 1966 GMC accessory book and it says Silver Part number 2234127 for the mirror arm/mirror assembly and then the 1965 Accessory book it says white 2234076 . I am finding some 64-65 factory photos with white also and silver for 1966. Looks like Im on the hunt,... again.

Mirror color on GMC's could almost warrant a new thread, don't believe it has ever been discussed on the forum. Hate to hijack this thread into a mirror thread. Telling the difference between a '64 and a '65 GMC is very difficult from old black and white photos, In my previous post, I noticed the green '66 has '65 hubcaps. This leads me to believe it is a early promotional shot and or the grill was doctored. I doubt of the mirror color was altered, so I would say the green '66 is actually a '65. The blue '64 sub looks legitimate with white arms and mirrors. There could have been a transition from white to silver in the middle of the '64 model run or '64's were white. Need to study more "all original paint '64 and '65 GMC's" and their assembly plants in the future. This photo is from a '65 GMC ad, and shows silver arms and mirrors.

Wondering if an upgrade to the custom cab with stainless trim around windshield would warrant a chrome or stainless side mirror on the GMC. My 64 GMC (Oakland Plant) has a stainless small left side mirror. It did not even have a factory inside rear view mirror or right side mirror.

factorystock 04-21-2020 08:42 PM

Re: 1966 GMC Short Fleetside

Trim level did not effect color of arm and mirrors. Your '64 GMC was actually built in Fremont, not Oakland like some books claim. GMC were built in Fremont along side Chevy's starting in mid to late '63. Your '64 would have had a black arm and black mirror. Inside rear view and right side mirrors were options.

Well I learn something new every day about this truck, thanks for that.

ID tag says GMC TRUCK DD
1002HF37--A
Has a crayong mark of 720 under steering column on column seal plate.

Anything else you can tell me with this? Sorry for hijacking the thread
