Speedometer noise
This winter, I started to hear a noise from the speedometer. Kind of a chirping buzz sound that varied with speed. I attributed it to cold as it seemed to go away after the cab got good and warm. Well, it is now making the noise all the time and it seems to be louder. And it is no longer cold. The speedometer has been working without jumping around even though is is making that chirping sound.
Well, today on a couple of occcasions, the chirp turned into louder constant buzz and the speedo needle would jump up to 90, down to 20 then the buzz would stop and it would settle back in at 60 mph with the chirp sound. A few years ago I replaced the speedo cable. I’m thinking this is more of a problem with the speedometer. What do you guys think? |
Re: Speedometer noise
Sounds like you need to talk with Tbone1964. Drop him a PM he will be able to diagnose your noise.

Re: Speedometer noise
You probably need to pull the cable and clean and lube it. Once I lubed mine I had no problems. I was having this exact same issue before I did that. I just sprayed the cable and housing down with brake cleaner until what was coming out turned clear and then coated the cable in white lithium grease. Some guys don’t like using white lithium grease and will have you go by speedometer cable. There are varying opinions about that, but I’ve never had a problem with white lithium grease

Re: Speedometer noise
Thanks guys. I too thought Tbone might have an idea. Pulling and lubing the cable might be any easy first step. It probably only has 4000 miles on it, but I can give that a try. I do have another instrument cluster I could maybe swap the speedometer from, but really don't want different mileage showing on the odometer.

Mine was noisy and bouncy. No more. |
Re: Speedometer noise
Mine had the exact same symptoms, a Good cleaning of both the cable and the housing , using the correct lube solved it.
