62 Upper steering shaft coupler

I have a 62 C10 that will be converted to power steering in the next month or so. I'm looking at the upper steering shaft coupler and wondering if anyone has converted to a universal joint and eliminated the coupler? Since I'll need to change the rag joint, I'm thinking of adding a collapsible shaft at the same time. In the picture attached from the 62 shop manual supplement, you can see that the upper shaft has a pin through it that sits inside the coupler. The shaft also looks thicker there. Any ideas on how best to add a universal joint and collapsible shaft? Do any of the later trucks have a shaft that would work with the existing upper shaft and pin? I could cut the pin off, but then I'm getting short on room to attach the new joint. My other option is to just leave it and cut the shaft down lower and use a rag joint at the bottom. Any ideas or experience is appreciated.

I'm asking about the top of the steering shaft - where it meets the coupler, not the bottom where Captainfab's bracket mounts. thanks

The 72 steering shaft looks the same and it is collapsible don’t know if this helps

I have done what you are asking about, but it was on a 1967 column. This is what I figured out with that one;
When i installed the power box with the added bracket, the input shaft on the new box sat at a slight offset from my column (and perhaps the angle or incline changed a slight amount as well). I put in a call to Borgeson and found that they have quality tech support there. They explained that one U-joint will correct and angle variation but it takes two of them to correct an offset. They helped me figure out which part numbers I needed to get one joint on the column and a vibration dampening joint on the box. Both joints had their inside sockets ready to mate with a Borgeson cut to fit double D collapsible shaft. The whole deal cost me around 250 bucks and was a weekend job. The installation instructions were decent, but there are tutorials on Youtube as well. I recall Flaming River steering had a nice one about cutting the DD shaft. |
