Front Discs on the old control arms
 

Has anyone ever converted to disc using the stock control arms? I am thinking about doing the switch and really don't want to change out the cross member or the arms. Can I do ball joints and spindle? Also want to do the brakes without a booster to maintain engine bay look. I am doing a master cylinder swap to a 2 chamber. All help is appreciated.

Sure, many of the usual vendors ( Cpp, Brothers, Lmc, etc) sell disc brake conversion kits that don't require you to change the arms. As for the booster....I don't use one and the pedal effort is about the same as stock brakes.

Yes, on my 63, I used a PerformanceOnline kit back in 2015. I believe that the spindles they used were new squarebody style spindles, so the kit came with the correct ball joints for the spindles. The ball joints fit my stock arms with no issues

Included in the kit was a dual master with proportioning valve. I have been running my truck without a brake booster since I installed the kit. It stops well and I haven't had any issues with it

If you have a 60-62, do yourself a favor and convert to a 73 up front cross member and suspension.

what year truck? If you have a torsion bar front end and are not planning on lowering it any more than 5 inches or installing bags I would suggest not changing the cross member. I did and it was not at all worth the work. Sorry to disagree with you demian5.

Pick your spindle 71-72 or 73-87 then use ball joints for that spindle and you have to use a tie rod adapter so that you can use adapt your year truck tie rod with the spindle tie rod. I did this on my 66 burb and used 86 square body spindles because they were free to me. I just can’t remember the tie rod combination outers or inners used with the adapter but there are write ups on the subject. Easy install to do.

Late model outers used as outers and early outers used as inners.

If I recall correctly torsion bar trucks have an entirely different lower ball joint than the coil spring trucks, and they don't interchange into the A arms.

I swapped out my drums on my 60 to disc about 5 years ago using drop spindles and local parts house parts. I kept the torsion bar suspension and have had no issues . Here is my link but tinny pics photos no longer show up. Farily easy one mandriveway weekend job

Went the same route on my 1960 back in 2004 with no issues. Added rear discs last year as well.
