63 hub cap question??

2 Attachment(s)
Finally getting around to my ’63 Burb Build which will be a full on restoration effort minus the GSI front, DEG rear suspensions with bags at all four corners. And of course the Caddy 472 engine might not be as original as the existing straight six…but anyways,

While getting the new 17” rims ready for paint and installing the hub cap clips I kind of need to figure out what I am going to be doing with my hubcaps.

What I had thought were steel hubcaps with chrome are something else as a magnet doesn’t stick to them.

• Are these hub caps Stainless, Aluminum?

They are chrome over brass. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=702839

Chrome over brass??? That would explain it, as they definitely look like old chrome. But I wouldn't have guessed over brass

I was looking for that thread but kept going down other post's rabbit holes! Though I didn't see where he mentioned the hubcap composition.

Thank you for the answer!

I guess that I will get out my hammer and dollies and get to work. I have some other items that need to be re-chromed.

Be sure the caps you have or acquire are the type made for clips. These will have the extra ring on the backside to accept the clip.

The factory rims have the nubs which of course my new rims don't have.

That is why I added the clips, took a couple of tries but got them located so that the hub caps can go on and stay on.

Before I spend any time with a hammer and dolly, then have them rechromed, I do want to give them a road test!

.

The subject is covered more in depth in another thread. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...rome+hubcapsGM pickups used this weak hubcap construction till around '72-'73 till aluminum was used

Good luck with that. The caps shown are the type that fit over nubs, not clips.
I guess if you can make them work, then whatever, right?

Can you show how you did the clips?

I'm not sure who makes them, but there are clips made specifically to attach nub style hubcaps to wheels such as 22" transport wheels that never came with clips or even hubcaps from the factory. Lots of guys have done it that way recently, but I have heard of the slips not being adjusted tight enough and the cap comes flying off while cruising

I'll post a pic when I get my rims back from the sandblaster so I can paint them this weekend.

I just drilled and bolted the clips on the wheel. Pretty simple.
