How many 76 factory black 454 shorty ??
 

just wondering...Im looking at the factory 1976 brochure and seeing that black was not a color offered on the brochure.... i was wondering how many were built, and being a short bed 454. even less? would anyone out there have production numbers ??
is there such a site? or book? i know gm offer's info on 1977 up. but not 1976.
oh well just interested.. seems like a pretty rare truck..?

I can't say that a SWB with a 454 is rare, but I have a 1978 SWB with a 454 and I've never seen another one. I bought mine new in December of 1977 and I know that it was a factory misorder.

My brother had a 76 or 77, factory black, 454 swb truck. Truck was pretty loaded with options. Will try to remember to ask him about it next time I talk to him.

I had just restored and sold a 1956 Ford F-100 (big window) and a 1959 El Camino (348 w/tri-power). Then it dawned on me - I'm a firefighter without a pickup. I headed off to the Chevy dealer in Pasadena, CA, who was a fire dept. fleet dealer. They had only one square on the lot that had just been delivered to the dealership. I got a great deal on it. After they prepped it, I picked it up and pulled out of the lot, laying rubber for a city block on Colorado Blvd.

I thought to myself that a SBC had a lot of power. When I got home and looked at the window sticker, I saw that the engine was a 454. I returned to the dealer a couple of days later (Christmas Eve) to pick up the factory floor mats. I asked the fleet salesman what the deal was with my new square. He told me that another firefighter had special ordered a 3/4 ton longbed camper special and the factory screwed up and my new pickup was the result. End of story!

I know how detail oriented you go with your builds..very cool!!! I was wondering if you have ever done (maybe for this build) have you tried to retrieve info from the GM archives? I think you send the vin & GM sends all the info on record for the vehicle.

First... Thank you for the complement. I have contracted GM And the said they have nothing on my 76. it seems that they only go back as far as 1977. Darn! missed it by one year. seeing your a neighbor pm me for contact number. have you stop by if you get a chance.... thx again. dave

Did you find out anything more about the rarity of your truck? I have a factory black 454/400 short bed, and wondered the same thing. Even if they aren't "rare", I can tell you they didn't make many of them, because I have searched high and low and only found a few short 454 trucks! I had thought about putting an LS motor in mine, but I'm afraid I might destroy the value if it's a rare truck.

I have a 76 step side 454/400 3.73 posi that my Dad special ordered new.
Its was originally a goldish brown color. I wanted him to get a black one. to replace the black 1972 402/400 3.73 posi stepside that he was selling

It's a good possibility that a factory mistake or a misorder would be rare. But the sheer volume of those trucks produced at that time makes it so you kind of have to define the word rare. It's not going to be like ZL1 69 Camaro rare. But unusual for sure, and if black wasn't a color offered, then it would likely have been a special order of some kind or a fleet order. And with the short wheelbase and big motor, there are probably a lot of them that didn't last through the first 5 years. It sure looks like a cool truck. What are your plans?

I agree with the others, uncommon. On the other end of the extreme, a 6 cyl with and automatic was uncommon. Black was always a standard color in the 60's and 70's, but also was uncommon. Roof lights on a 1/2 ton was also uncommon.
