1960 GMC 1000 Motor Swap
2 Attachment(s)
Hi All,
Currently, my truck has the original good running 305 v6 with about 93k miles on it. The transmission is the 3-speed on the floor. I'm wanting to swap out the old motor and transmission but having a tough time figuring out what swap to go with. I have around $10K as a budget. this will be my daily driver during the spring to fall. looking for about 300-400hp and converting it to automatic. what is a good reliable option to go with for my budget? |
Re: 1960 GMC 1000 Motor Swap
I think with your budget, you could get either an ls or a sbc. If you want better gas mileage, go ls. If you want the cool factor, go sbc. It might be easier to get the power numbers that you want with an ls. My personal preference is sbc, but I'm a little biased

Found a 400 sbc and a 700R4 transmission. Both brand new and under budget. I'm having a tough time finding motor mounts and transmission cross member. Does anyone make a conversion kit?

Re: 1960 GMC 1000 Motor Swap
There are no aftermarket engine mounts available for the '60-'62 frames. The factory side mounts for a small block are extremely rare. What does work are the engine mount brackets for the '67-'72 with a small block. Those will work with a 1/4" thick spacer on top of the frame. There are no aftermarket trans crossmembers either for the '60-'62 frames. I am currently working on reproducing the factory auto trans crossmembers for the '60-'62 short wheelbase frames, but I don't think it will work with a 700R4 unless you move the engine forward to compensate for the difference between a PG/TH350 and the 700R4.
