'05 Tahoe 5.3 Oil Change

Well after trading off our '99 Tahoe for the '05 in Dec. last year coming up on the first oil change for it according to the 'oil life' percentage. Has full synthetic oil in it and plan to stay with that, Quaker State 5W30 and a WIX 51042 filter. Reading thru the owner's manual says need to change within 600 miles of the "Change Oil" message coming on. Okay, fine, where does that message show? The book does not mention that. Is it on the digital speedometer readout or does it show on the dash elsewhere? Owner manuals sure get thicker every year with all the bells and whistles now days.

It will show up on the gauge cluster. Here’s how to reset it:

Does it show in the odometer window where total vehicle mileage shows or elsewhere on the gauge cluster? Looks pretty straight forward to reset after doing an oil change. Percentage of oil life now shows " 0 " but no message has shown up yet?

The "Change Engine Oil Soon" message should appear on the display panel where the mileage displays....maybe its faulty...

Perform an Engine Oil Change reset as follows:

Engine Off
Turn Key on but do not start engine
Press Accelerator pedal hard to the floor 6 times in quick succession
Start Engine

Message should display "Engine Oil Life Reset"....

If it doesnt, the Oil Life monitoring system may have been disabled or is faulty.

Let us know how you go...

Yes it will show up where odometer readout is.
On our Suburban, also running synthetic, it comes on about every 8k miles, but message does not come on & stay on. It will come on when first crank up & then on & off occassionally when it's time.

Hasn't popped up yet, will keep watching. Our odometer read out is not near that bright. Have the dash light switch turned up bright but can't hardly see it during the day unless sitting in the garage? Is that an easy fix or .....? Seems nothing is easy or not costly to fix on these new fangled contraptions, LOL.

Probably have bad solder joints. Google 1999-2006 Silverado cluster repair and you’ll find plenty of tutorials on how to resolder. Done the fix plenty of times for dim or no displays. Common fail items for these NBS clusters.

Several groups of SMT resistors develop cracked solder joints.

There's a right way and a wrong way to open the cluster and care has to be taken to not botch it. A $10 WalMart soldering iron is not the tool to use on this kind of work.
Look at some of Jeffscortlx videos on Youtube.

Well guess the "Change Engine Oil" popped up on the odometer window yesterday coming home from a quick turn around 300 mile round trip out of state. Came on several times and then reverted back to the odometer mileage so guess it is working correctly. Just REALLY dim, hard to see. Looked at a few u-tube videos and get the feeling not something this ol man wants to tackle. Not the best with a soldering iron and when I don't feel comfortable doing a repair I let those with more experience step in. Not always cheap but then neither is a botched repair that needs fixing. Will look into repair locally that can do such. The dim reading is irritating for sure.

I know these guys aren't local but we've used them for cluster rebuilds and the service is great and quick turn around. Highly reccommended

Re: '05 Tahoe 5.3 Oil Change

Changed the oil and filter today on the '05. Boy, 5/W30 oil flows quick when it is warm, LOL. Luckily had the pan in place but dropped that hot pan bolt in the oil and had to get the magnet to fish it out. Really went a bit easier than our '99 Tahoe as the filter on the '05 sits vertically and not angled like the '99 did. Had to make a quick run to the parts house tho and get a 6th quart of oil. Had bought a 5 qt jug like always did on the '99, that wasn't enough, quart shy. Got the oil life percentage set back to 100% with no problem. Still need to change the trans filter and fuel filter.

Have not looked into the dim cluster light fix yet but that is on the list also.

I don't remember for sure, but I believe the fuel filter is in the tank on that era of Tahoe's/trucks and gets changed when you change the pump.

Never thought about that but your right. I Googled '05 Tahoe fuel filter replacement and Google said it is no longer a serviceable item. Part of the fuel pump assembly in the tank. Not at all sure about that being a good design engineering process but guess time will tell?

There's a strainer in the tank. The frame mounted fuel filter went away prior to 2005.
