Push button starter

I have a 79 c19. So i wired my starter to a push button. You have to have the keys in and on. Open up ashtray and push the button. I would like it to look like the cigarette lighter. Any thoughts? I have the button there now. But it is a big red button. Would like it to be a little more inconspicuous

Thanks

Re: Push button starter

I would say Gorilla glue/super glue the cigarette knob onto your button. Maybe even paint away the red to match the color of the cigarette lighter handle/knob.

I think this is a great idea. Would it be possible to have the button turned down to fit inside of the cigarette lighter to give you a little more room to work?

Just a button from autozone. It is like a plastic lense

that's gonna be tuff to fasten anything to that switch and still be durable..
there are less conspicuous switches though that don't scream big red button..
but what your wanting could be done with some creative fab work
if you could get a button that would fit inside the lighter socket, I'm thinking you might could take the lighter socket and mount the pushbutton in the bottom of it, shorten the lighter element just enough to not contact the switch, and stick the lighter back in..then when you push the lighter in it would push against the button...you could pull the lighter out and take with you as well..kinda like a key..who would think to stick their finger in the lighter socket..

Re: Push button starter

A few years back my ignition switch connection in the column failed so instead of dealing with that I found an old floor mounted dimmer switch installed it as my ignition switch and used my dual tank selector switch as my starter button. After an encounter with a large chunk of metal something at 80mph my passenger saddle tank was no longer useful as a fuel container which freed up the selector switch which is a momentary rocker on my 85.
Great anti-theft device. Even with a passenger they cant tell how I start my truck.
It's also great for rolling backfires. Never take my hands off the wheel.
