1968 Engine Frame Pad location?
 

For the life of me I can’t remember what holes a SBC uses to mount the engine frame pads... I’ve used the forward holes on previous builds but I see guys using the rear mount holes for Small blocks. My 69 has a big block and it can only use the forward holes. What were the factory locations of 307, 327, and 350
Trucks with an automatic? Even if you look at trucks online they all have them in both locations. I’ll add pictures of my engine in the 68 with forward location. Thanks in advance for responses.

V8 2 wd normally uses the front set of holes. SB V8 4 wd uses the rear holes on 6 cylinder stands. I just moved my SB to the rear set of holes to free up more room at the front of the engine with long water pump and accessories.

Talking to my late cousin about his 69 with 396 build a while ago he used the back set of holes with the high hump
The reason he used the back hole position was to make room for the headers

Yes 4x4s use the back set of holes as well i have seen a few trucks with a 396 in the 4x4 stock location

V8 and 250 six bangers use the same stands the 292 use an offset set of stands on one side

I am planing on my build of my 68 using the back holes with my 350 as i am also changing transmissions and will need to shorten my drive shaft any way

When I swapped out my IL-6 with 3OTT for a SB and a short tail shaft Turbo 350, I didn't even know those holes existed! :o

I changed out the transmission cross member, getting rid of the front riveted one, and the original driveshaft length was perfect!

WHEW!

The engine sits back further, and my HEI just clears the firewall, but that helps with the weight transfer upon acceleration so I'm happy.

V8 and 250 I6 stands are different, as shown in the pictures in this thread.

I didn't even know that at the time either, I bolted the V-8 to whatever pads the 6 was bolted to, and 20 years later it's still going strong!

I know from experience taking a 250 cylinder out of my c10 move it to a k10 frame after that died dropped in a 350 no frame motor mount changes

Exactly what I did, 250 inline 6 to small block 350 V-8 without any change in frame brackets or location from back holes.

As stated in my thread. " I’m not saying they won’t bolt up because I haven’t tried to interchange them but they are different. "

Oh I understand you in that they are different, I just didn't know that at the time I decided to swap engines, and despite that, the swap worked anyway.

What really tickled me was that the shiny part of the trans. yoke that sat in gear oil inside of my 3-speed manual, with the dull part exposed to the elements, fit exactly in the same position inside my Turbo. 350 automatic.

Thought I was going to have to lengthen/shorten the driveshaft.

I really lucked out on this swap despite my ignorance.

Good to hear your experience!!!
I've read, here, many times of folks yanking the 6 banger, for a V8 swap, and trying to make the 6 cyl stands work, WITHOUT success...even after cutting and welding, etc.

If that would have been the case with my engine swap attempt, I'm afraid it would still be sitting in pieces 20 years later.

292 six has frame mount more foward
I dont rember if i was able to just move it back or i changed the pass side perch when i changed the 292 out for the 250 my cousin taught me how to rebuild

Beauty of gm keeping same engine geometry between most of there engine families
On a two wheel drive they may be shaped different but still have the same geometry except for the 292
