Rattle Can Touch-up Paint?
About 20 or so years ago, I went to a paint shop for some touch up paint.
Guy came out with some kind of handheld device, put it to my truck finish and then made up some paint that he than put into areosol cans. The match was excellent. The can says DAR 2188 Medium Blue on the label. That shop may have also compensated for any paint fading, which may also explain why the match was so close. That shop has long since been closed and I'm running out of paint. I believe that paint color is/was a factory option, but I can't seem to find anything close on-line. Someone suggested that a body/paint shop might be able to help. Do you have any suggestions that might point me in the right direction? https://i.imgur.com/gQzKeDHl.jpg https://i.imgur.com/gLjO7mqt.jpg |

Appreciate the help!
Sounds like a lot of work mixing it myself and I'm pretty sure I'd mess it up! :o |
Re: Rattle Can Touch-up Paint?
Its not that difficult, the app I mentioned gives you percentage starting points to mix for the shade you need. To get your color ratio you only need to mix a small amount until you have the right mixture for color you desire. Save that ratio to mix larger quantities. Once done I mix three parts paint to one part acetone. I add a product top (the top of the can) of Japan Dry and one top of oil base hardener catalyst activator to give more shine and harden the paint to a stronger finish. I use a cheap HF purple air gun with an inline moisture separator and a pressure regulator. 35psi has worked well for me but this will depend on the viscosity of your final paint mix. You can look up how to mix paint to prep on Youtube.
The mixing app on Google Play is called color mix by Idea Matters. It has a camera mode included to capture your color Don't hesitate to ask if you need anything, I was leery of it too but its not that difficult. Shoot some sheet metal as a test piece for color match and to make sure you don't get orange peel. https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/pr...-half-1-2-pint https://www.acehardware.com/departme...lvents/1211150 https://www.homedepot.com/p/Klean-St...AC18/100144922 |
Re: Rattle Can Touch-up Paint?
One of the regional parts chains in my area has this same paint scanning, custom mixing capability. If you get a decent employee (sometimes a challenge) at an O'Riley's or Autozone or wherever, they should be able to direct you to someone in your area with the technology if they themselves do not have it.

Re: Rattle Can Touch-up Paint?
DAR 2188 strikes me as an enamel paint code. Try calling your local paint supply and see if they can hook you up with a pint.

Re: Rattle Can Touch-up Paint?
Its a bit of a drive, but down here in Vancouver WA is Bob's Paintland - they make spray cans. They are great there - and touch up paint was made for me just by sight, matched perfectly..

Just wanted to thank all of you for the touch-up paint ideas and locations.
I knew this forum, and especially you kind folks, would be the place to seek answers! |
Re: Rattle Can Touch-up Paint?
I have that same stuff mixed into spray cans at my nearest automotive paint supplier. They can match to code or with a scanner, which is beast for older paint.

Re: Rattle Can Touch-up Paint?
I will look into it.

My local paint supply does the aerosol cans . Little pricey but work well . When I dont feel like pulling out all my paint equipment for a small job this works well . But for small areas

Couldn't locate app on play store. I got a ton of entries but none with the vendor name. Is it maybe called something else? |
