1960 Apache C10 Rear Wheel Seals and Bearings
 

Good Evening All,

Ive got a 1960 C10 with what I believe to be the stock rear-end.

I was changing the oil last weekend and it appears that the rear wheel seal on the passenger side has blown out ( wheel and tire coated with thick grease, gear oil on brake shoes, and no missing brake fluid)

I am trying to find the correct seals and bearings, but running into difficulties.

The good local parts store told me to pull them out and then they could help me find them and rockauto has a few different options, and I am not sure which ones correct.

Does anybody know (or know how to confirm) which bearings and seals are correct without pulling the rear-end apart, so I can have them on hand before I begin the job.

You most likely have an Eaton rear, but I'm not exactly sure what the number is. Does your pumpkin look round with a cover on the rear and bolts on the front for the center section as well?

it has 10 "Bolts" and they are actual what appear to be studs? with nuts on each side of the cover

You have the Eaton HO32/33 differential. I do not have any part numbers for bearings or seals anymore as it has been about 35 years since I have worked on one of those differentials.

Thanks Capt'n - at least we got it narrowed down, I was worried that it might not be an original axle ( the lower mounts have been welded(reinforced?) )

I replaced the rear wheel bearings and seals on my 60 a few years ago. The bearings were an extremely tight press fit and required a machine shop to press them out and press on new ones.

I'm working out in the street, so this job is going to have to go to a shop, but hes a smaller shop, so I wanted to make sure hes not stuck with the truck on a lift while attempting to locate parts.

Can you confirm if, as this has a removable center section in the diff, that its just the one roller bearing and seal per side?

Pretty sure that's correct, but someone with more knowledge will hopefully confirm. Mine was a 60 GMC so I'm not 100% sure. Sorry, I didn't record the parts numbers.

The '60-'62 GMC's had the same Eaton HO32/33 from the factory

So it sounds like we are all on the same page, and if any body searches this.

The bearing seem to be : R1502EL - available from several manufacturers including Timkin and National

The seal seems to be : SKF 18695 - also interchangeable and available from several manufacturers / vendors.

I will update this if these turn out to not be the case.

Update from the shop, 1 of the axles is in, so those are the correct part numbers.

I updated my ISO post on the facebook, so I thought I would drop this in here as well if anybody stumbles upon it.

Compiled from a bunch of sources :

1960-1962 C10s could have used an Eaton HO-32/33 rear end, also referred to as a GM 55T

(similar to the axle in some 55-64 Passenger cars (referred to as a GM 55P) but parts are not interchangeable between the 55T and 55P

This has a removable 3rd member design very similar to the Ford inch. They have 17 spline axles and are held in place using circlips.

Like the Ford inch, they will only have one roller wheel bearing (not a bearing / race). The bearing I used is : Timkin # R1502EL and the seal was : SKF 18695 (the best prices I found was on RockAuto, searching by PN).

Eaton advertises they have available R&P sets - most likely 3.93 ratio, possibly a 3.38 is now available.

The axle measures 62" WMS to WMS.

Direct replacement axles are not available, but "Tom's Differentials" advertises 30 spline axles that can be used as an upgrade with new spider gears.

"Dutchman Axles MAY have a stock equivalent (no guarantee this is correct) SR # 302 for approximately $500 as of 10/1/2020 before shipping. Currie, Strange, and southwest speed offer "bolt in" kits for the 60-62 C10s with a new 9" set up for approximately $4000.

Dutchman quotes the axle lengths as follows :
LH : 30 1/8
RH : 31 3/16
(I haven't verified any of the measurements on this thread, so please double check before ordering)
