intermittent Wipers Will Not Turn Off
 

Hey guys. My intermittent wipers will not turn off. Both speeds work, and I can vary the intermittent speed. I just can't turn them off with the switch in the off position. I timed them and they are a consistent time between wipes, so I think that means I am getting constant power. This leads me to believe it is the wiper switch. Does that sound correct?

Try unplugging the wiper park switch, and see what happens. I think that should stop the wipers dead in their tracks, but I'm not sure. Report back on the results.

Your wiper gearbox/motor assembly has up to three electrical connectors. The motor itself has a three-pin connector for power and ground. Depending on the year, there might be a two-pin connector for the integral washer pump. The other two pin connector is the park switch.

A 1986 will only have two connectors on the wiper motor. The three-pin motor connector, and the two-pin park switch. Unplug the park switch and see what happens.

I’m out of town til Sunday but will report back! What will it mean if it stops, and what will it mean if it doesn’t stop them?

I'm going off of memory here, but I'm pretty sure that with the wiper switch in the off position, the wipers should stop in their tracks the moment you unplug that connector. By unplugging it, you're replicating a parked condition, so the wipers stop running.

The wiper switch doesn't actually turn off the wipers. The off position on the switch simply reroutes the wiper power through the park switch. This way, the wiper motor continues to run, until the park switch brakes the connection, and it stops.

If unplugging the park switch makes the difference, I'm pretty sure it means the park switch is bad.

Just an update on this. I unplugged the two prong connector as per the post above and now the wipers run continuously at a normal speed, and I cannot change the speed. I'll look into getting a park switch. Not sure if it can be purchased separate from the wiper motor.

I had the same wiper problems on my 94 gmc.
I searched and found lots of threads.

The wiper motor modules were the culprit.
Dirty contacts.
I think the change to a better wiper module was around 95. Yours could be the older style.
