Re: 396 BB Air Cleaner
If you use a non-dropped base, you should be able to go with a 14" diameter air cleaner. That's what I have on the 454 in my '66 Suburban with a Performer intake, 750 Holley and an HEI. The RPM intake is a little taller than the Performer, so you should have even more clearance.

Not sure what a non-dropped base refers to. |
Re: 396 BB Air Cleaner
A non dropped base is where the base of the air cleaner is flat across and sits completely above the carb. It does not drop down over the carb as about 90% of them do.

You might be able to find a 1.5" steel spacer off of a TBI 4.3L engine and use it on a drop base? Also they make carb spacers of various heights, maybe they would work?
Here's a pic from a latter model truck: |
Re: 396 BB Air Cleaner
I believe this is the one I bought for my '66 Suburban with the 454..........it was about 28 years ago, so it may be slightly different. Bit it is the same design I am talking about with a flat base. That way it clears the distributor with no issues. There is plenty of height under the hood for a tall air cleaner.
