Re: Dumb question about rock guards

Probably to add strength and reduce flex. Just my opinion.

Re: Dumb question about rock guards

One dimple hits bumper braces so it doesn’t lay flat so when you try to bolt it down it distorts the rock guard

I do not recall seeing this before, where does it go on our style trucks, preferably a 1964 C10 LWB Stepside.

On my truck I shimmed between the parts with washers in order to avoid that distortion.

That’s what I did also just trying to figure out what the reasoning was behind them ?

I believe that is the purpose of those dimples ... to make contact with the bumper brace so it doesn't lay flat down against it. If they were flat down against both bumper braces, they would be slightly tilted in relation to the top edge of the bumper. The dimples cause the outboard side to be raised up just enough so the guard stays parallel with the bumper.

Also, the factory guards were stamped with an indentation surrounding the bolt hole on the side with the dimples. That allows them to be bolted down tight without any distortion. It appears as though the reproduction guards are lacking that indentation around the bolt hole and therefore requiring shim washers underneath to avoid distortion.
