grommet for this hole in the firewall
1 Attachment(s)
Hi, where do I find a grommet for this hole? This is a 7/8 inch hole and the cable passing through it is about 1/4 inch, it is for the cold/hot blend door control cable. 1969 cab with A/C.
I have been able to find 7/8 grommets with a large center hole, but would rather find one with no hole so I can drill, or with a small center hole so I can hug that control cable that goes through it. I wonder if the factory just put a square of that gooey black tar-like tape on the hole. Firewall grommet kits do not have a grommet for this hole (or for any 7/8 hole) |

After digging in my memory about what was on the truck when I got it, and studying the goo around the hole I have concluded at the factory they put a square of that gooey black tar-like tape on the hole. The same stuff they use on the evaporator core lines. There is no suitable readily-available grommet and they probably didn't use a grommet at the factory.
I considered ordering online a rubber hole plug which is very much like a grommet except it has no center hole, and cutting or punching my own suitable-size center hole. At the hardware store I found a rubber washer. I decided to clean up the area around the hole and super glue it to the firewall. |

Re: grommet for this hole in the firewall
Thanks, I like that style grommet. But this is the only 7/8 inch hole in the firewall, so it seems like it would not fit if it is suitable for things such as speedometer cable, oil pressure line, vacuum lines, etc which are a different hole size. Thanks of everybody else's input too.
I think my hardware store rubber washer looks very good. It looks like a grommet, and may be actually better than a grommet for this particular application of passing a control cable through. |

Here’s what a local auto parts guy found for me. I remember it was designated for another purpose but it’s the right size for that hole. I think I remember him saying it was a Mopar differential plug? The logo makes me think it’s a Dorman but that part number doesn’t bring up anything in the Google. Sorry for the vague “help” but that’s all I got today.
