Moving Driver Seat Back - on top of carpet or under?
I'm doing this mod on one of the trucks I'm building.
For those who have done this - did you put the steel plate under the carpet or on top of it? I plan to weld nuts to the bottom of the plate so I can install them front legs like OEM. I also plan to place some hard rubber (possible an old body mount puck) to help with distributing the load over a larger section of the floor where the front feet are. This really does help with the leg room on these trucks - I have 2 additional inches to move back now. Links for reference - here and here. I have everything mocked up now - just wondering if I need to plan to have the plate visible or not after I get my carpet installed. |
Re: Moving Driver Seat Back - on top of carpet or under?
My '70 had two holes at the rear that were about 2½" back from where the seat was bolted...same size...same spacing
I made a steel plate like you described....welded nuts on the bottom and attached it to the existing front mounting holes with flat head screws....under the carpet It made a slight bulge but un-noticeable with the seat in. I'm 6'2".....it made a world of difference for me I have pictures somewhere...just can't find them right now |

Perfect - I was hoping it was under the carpet for a cleaner look. I just need to weld the nuts to the bottom side of the plate and I should be good. Did you run anything at the back of the plate (underneath for support) by chance or just leave it alone.
I had to weld up some holes in the floor from a PO installing some non-OEM bucket seats. I took your lead with the front bolts being flat to prevent bunching. Here is a pic from one of your older posts. |

I didn't put anything underneath the plate but the nuts I welded underneath weren't far from the floor.
I used ¼" steel plate......I figured it it sagged at all the nuts would contact the floor (I searched high and low for that picture, I didn't remember posting it) |
