1977 Chevy 292 Fan
1 Attachment(s)
I recently purchased a Chevy 292 to install in my 1953 Chevy 3600 truck. It was pulled from a 1977 Chevy C20 with an automatic transmission. The truck had "heavy duty" emissions which I believe means no A.I.R. and no catalytic converter. The engine is "complete" except for the power steering pump and bracket. It did come with a couple of non-stock components. The HEI was swapped out for an HEI with an in-cap coil and the thermostat housing is from a G series van.
The cooling fan is a 19" direct drive (no thermostatic clutch) unit with 7 flex blades. Is this the original fan? I've searched for pictures and haven't found a 292 fan that looks like it. Thanks! |
Re: 1977 Chevy 292 Fan
Absolutely not original.
Most of them came with a simple stamped 4 blade fan. I suppose an automatic /air truck might have had a 6 blade or a thermostatic. Flex fans were never factory on these. 'Maybe' on a C60. Not on a C20. |
Re: 1977 Chevy 292 Fan
Thanks for that information. The C20 donor was used in a salvage yard for approximately 10 years before it was retired and parted out. I suspect the truck spent a lot of time idling and never saw speeds greater than 10 miles/hr. Maybe the truck had overheating problems and the original fan was replaced with this 7 blade fan to improve air flow at idle.
