Dissembling a tilt column
 

I have been unable to get the tilt column apart. See attached picture.

The round tin cover is supposed to come off. Some say to used a slide hammer to assist. Unsure what is going on but it's not moving. The service manual shows tool j-22708. It's a puller that locks onto the outer lip for removing the housing.



Anybody had this issue before? If so, how did they solve the issue. I know parts are difficult to come by for the tilt columns and don't want to damage any parts.

The j-22708 tool makes it soo much easier to remove the upper housing but if you don't have that tool, take a flat screwdriver and lightly tap around the bottom perimeter. It could damage the bottom edge slightly but sand it down and you should be ok

The tool is not that expensive.

That's not the correct tool for removing the upper housing

The link is for a lock plate removal tool.
They do look similar though.
The 72 columns don't incorporate a lock plate.

I have attempted to tap on the bottom of the sleeve and prying on the lip. I am to the point if I do it any harder I will damage the sleeve.
I will attempt to make a tool that can grab a larger area of the lip.

I did manage to get the turn signal switch out past the sleeve. I believe it was designed to have the sleeve pulled first, then the switch. Very difficult to get past the rolled edge of the sleeve without damaging the switch. However, I now have unfettered access to the lip. What should be a simple job is turning into a PITA.

It gave me some ideas for building a tool.
I am also going to tap around the base with a piece of plastic and a hammer and see if that helps.

The puller on eBay is similar to the factory puller. I believe the jaws are too long and possibly it is missing the legs to catch the inner lip.

Update;
I did get it off without damage. I used a three jaw puller with the jaws reversed. Still wouldn't pull it by itself.
However, with some tapping and tightening and some more tapping and some more tightening of the puller it finally came off.
It would be extremely easy to damage the lip with too much force on the puller.
Some crud and a little rust was holding it tight.

About 20 years ago, when I had access to a machine shop at work, I made this puller. I tapped the large hole in the middle to fit the threaded shaft from my steering wheel puller. I don't know what I did with this thing though because I haven't seen it anywhere in years. I've attached the crude detail drawings for the components.

I used a 3 jaw puller and cut a groove in the jaws to engage the rolled edge.
It works well, but you will probably need to do a little re-shaping after use. These collars have been on for a long time and don't remove easily.

My friend has a 1968 Cadillac with a telescoping column that requires a J-22598 and a J-2165 slide hammer. On this column there is nothing to push against because of the telescoping feature.

I have a tilt column to rebuild, so I made a plate that can be slipped into the top of the column for pulling off the cover with a steering wheel puller. The plate has an outer diameter of approximately 3-3/4", although I had to grind it down slowly until it would fit in. The cover came off easily, and there was zero deformation of the lip on the cover.

No, because it has to go in at an angle to clear the lip on the cover. That's definitely a problem if the turn signal switch is the style that has a red hazard knob that cannot be removed. If the switch is the original tilt style with a removable hazard knob, then the switch can be pulled out to make room for the tool. You have a lot of experience with tilt columns. Do they usually have the removable knob?
